Mini tune-up

Had the plugs changed at the dealer a week ago Friday, where my rig was given a clean bill of health for 172k on the speedo.

I just got done changing myself the air cleaner, cap, & rotor all with Toyota OEM parts of course
I did the plug wires last year with OEM ones.

Went for a test drive, and rig runs like a champ.
Should be good to go for about two years on the plugs, cap , & rotor.
I change the air filter about once a year.

I am a stickler for OEM parts as you can tell here.
Toyota builds quality into their tune-up parts.

Just got done? You posted that at 8:30!

I see I'm not the only one that gets up with the roosters.

I was outside early this morning starting a tranny cooler install, but found the 5/16" hose I had was just too tight, so I had to run to the store for some 3/8" . All that means I won't be working on it now for a few hours, till the fluid cools down.

Yep, I am an early bird
I debated to wash the rig today, but did this instead.
May wash the beast tomorrow.

I generaly start in about 6:30 am or after when I wash it.

Good luck on your cooler installation.

Spark Plugs

I am about to head to the dealer for 6 plugs. I called and the rep. said there are two types: Platinum($9.96 ea. last 60K) and non-platinum ($1.95 ea. last 30K) Well, I am not sure how hard to replace them, but I am going for the Nipon Denso (1.95 ea.) since they came stock on the vehicle. Any ideas?

How much did the dealer charge for your most recent service Corey?

Nam, mine are either the regular NGK, or the NP's, not sure.
Six plugs part # 90919-01176 @ $1.99 each came to $11.94, and the labor was $40 for 30 minutes.
$51.94 plus tax

Not bad to pay them to do the plugs considering I did not have to bust my back or knuckles doing them.
On my 22RE I had it was easy.
I'll gladly pay to hear someone else swear to do the plugs on the 3.0

Re:

I recently did a tune-up on my P/U. Unfortunely I used aftermarket (Borg Warner cap and rotor).

The P/U ran worse with the new cap and rotor. Instantly I went to the Toyota dealership and bought the OEM cap and rotor.

In summary, my truck with 104K ran just like brand new.

Isn't it funny how a lot will try the aftermarket stuff?
I grew up with my first cars in the mid 70s, and the big thing back then was the Accel caps, rotors, wires, ect.

On the Chevy 327 I had, it worked OK.
But for Toyota, nothing beats the OEM stuff they carry.
That's why our rigs last so long with the tune-up parts from them.

I ran Jacob's wires on my '90 truck I had, one of the worst wire sets I had ever had.
They could not take the heat from my Tri-Y header, and they broke down and had high resistance.

I switched back to OEM wires, and the Toy ones are more than enough to take the heat from a header.

Corey, not bad for the labor! I just did my 3.4L engine...it wasn't really hard...definitely easier than I thought! For the first time, it took me nearly an hour to complete the job. I am not sure how hard to replace the plugs on the 3.0

I replaced them with the Denso. I found that there were 3 Denso and 3 NGK originaly...not sure why Toyota did that!

I think OEM parts has the quality that's had to beat!

Nam, I have read many a time that Toyota for some reason stocks the new rigs off the line with 2 different plugs.
Perhaps so you can see which looks the best when you take them out

Yes, perhaps some other Toyota dealer may have charged for an hour of labor, but I only have good things to say about the dealership I use.
Been going there since '90.

Had to take back a DVD today, and the rig started up much faster too after replacing the items today.
I also run my timing at the stock setting.

I figure it came that way for a reason, why mess with it?
When I got the rig it had been advanced by two degrees, and it was pinging on hills.
After it was set back to stock, no more ping.
My rig never pings, not even on a hard pull up a steep hill.

I have read the 3.4 engines are a little more "consumer friendly" when it comes to doing the plugs.

I'm sure the mechanic who did mine can just about do the 3.0s with his eyes closed, and he knows all the tricks for doing it fast.

Nam,
Which side was the Denso and NGK on? I forgot which side I took mine out when I replaced them. I'm thinking about going 3 Denso and 3 NGK next time I replace my spark plugs. I just need to know exactly which side they came from. I'll try to find out if there is any improvement. Thanks.

I just changed my timing chain on my 22RE, and at the same time I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The wires, cap and rotor were all Borg Warner parts. Now I get some spark knock when the engine is under load-- you think these aftermarket parts could be the issue? I'm not sure if what I had on there before was OEM, but I never had an issue with this problem before. I'm thinking I may have to replace everything with OEM stuff. Wish I would've kept the old parts just to compare if that was indeed the problem.

Re:

Jeremy,

I would definitly go with only Toyota OEM parts. Going back to stock wires, cap and rotor made my truck run like brand new.

BTW How many miles were on your truck when you replaced your timing chain?

What year truck?

It's an 88 with 125,000 miles. Here's the full story in this thread.

I'll have to go pick up some OEM parts then! Thanks

Re: Jeremy

Jeremy,

Dont go to the dealer to buy your OEM parts! Buy them online. I used a wholesale OEM parts distributor on the net. The parts were 40% lower than Toyota of Des Moines.

Try searching the net. I will try and find the address.
