In looking at past posts about superchargers, it seems that most of the people with the pinging problems are at sea level. SLC is about 5,000 ft (i think) above sea level, and since the air is thinner up here, isn't there less of a chance that I will ping when I get my S/C installed? I mean it seems like an easy answer, less air= less chance of leaning out...

I am just trying to determine if/how bad my truck will ping...

 

I think that might be true. I know there is a lower level of octane required at elevation.

 

BINGO! There has been a correlation shown between altitude and pinging. Higher altitude means thinner air, which means less actual boost, which means more fuel per oxygen atom, which means less pinging.

Not dumb in the least. Until someone points it out to, it's easy to not know what that term refers to.

When your tranny is in too high of a gear for the situation and you step on the gas, there is sometimes a "rattling" sound from the engine that sounds like marbles in a tin can. That is "pinging".

Take a manual tranny, shift from 3rd to 5th under light throttle, then step harder on the gas. That will almost always duplicate it.

Clatter - clatter - clatter - clatter

Fuel is supposed to burn in a nice, orderly fashion. When it detonates or explodes instead of burning, it causes a "ping". It actually causes physical damage to the combustion chamber. When an engine that has been pinging badly is taken apart, the inside of the cylinders and the underside of the head look like very tiny trolls have beat the tar out of them with ball-peen hammers.

I am not sure what motivates those little buggers, but they sure do some serious damage when they get loose. When I tore the engine out of my Vette down, It looked like they had a war in there... I had to sleeve the cylinders to get enough material to work with. But alas, the Vette is gone and I hope to never see damage like that again

The "pinging" you refer to is pre-detonation. The combustion mixture has hit its flash point prior to the spark plug igniting it. Lower octane fuels have lower flash points.

Note : Spark plug heat range can have a impact on this. To hot of a plug can glow at high RPM's causing pre-ignition.

Make sure ya got a good flick running to keep 'em entertained, and they won't bother you anymore.

 

My Turbo motor had a nice amount of detonation but mainly to the head so bad it needs to be welded and resurfaced so if any one wants it let me know cheap. But the worst detonation I have ever seen in my life was when i pulled the head of my 2002 T-MAXX so bad the motor wont run anymore and i gotta get a new one I should post some pics its really bad.
