manual transmission question

hello I have a 96 Tacoma that I just put a new clutch in and while reinstalling the transmission I lost some gear oil so while I have the shifter off still I was wondering if I can top it off through where the shifter bolts to the top of the transmission. thank you

Yes you can. Just don't put too much in.

now if I wanted to change the gear oil in it ( I don't know if it's ever been changed ) what would I use to flush it clean?

Diesel fuel would work well.

If when you drained them the old oil still looked good I wouldn't bother with a flush.

haven't drained the transfer yet but already flushing the tranny. the main thing I was trying to make sure of is that I can fill it through the shift selector on the transfer case. thank you

How will you get all the diesel remnants out of it?

I figured I would let it drip until it stopped and then add the gear oil. there should be enough after it stops dripping to matter I would think

Any small amount of diesel that won't drain out is irrelevant.

Won't hurt anything.

You should be able to fill the t-case from the top, just like the tranny, provided that it is a TOP-SHIFT case, and not a FORWARD-SHIFT case.

I do not know what tranny and t-case that your year and model truck has.

Not sure why you would want to fill from the top .

I would just as soon not have the mess in the cab

I always get the gear oil warm before changing .

Me being a klutz I would never get the smell of Fuel oil out of the vehicle ..
