Clutch chirp?

Clutch chirp?
Hey ya'll
I got a tranny question. I have a 99 SR5 w/5 Speed manual.
When idling in neutral with clutch out I hear a continual 'chirping' sound. It goes away with just a slight touch of the clutch. Is there some sort of an adjustment that your typical shade tree mechanic can handle? Or should I bother at all? Or, lord help me, should I be running to a dealer ASAP?
Thanks a lot for any input.
K
btw-it's not loud, but does seem to be getting a little louder. That or it's just getting on my nerves.

That would be your throw-out bearing making the noise. There is no adjustment possible, that would correctly resolve it. The only fix is to replace the throw-out bearing which requires removing the transmission.
Either live with it for now, or get the clutch done. If your still under powertrain warranty, it is a covered item so long as the clutch isnt worn out.

Hey Jay,
Since we're on the topic of clutches, I have a 98 5speed whose clutch pedal "joint" i have to periodically (every 2-3 weeks) grease. Its on the inside of the 4runner.
If I don't the clutch lever joint will groan. You can hear that sucker even from outside the cab.
Should there be some kind of plastic/nylon piece that goes in there? Or is it always supposed to be greased?
Thanks,
Bob

There is suppose to be a "u" shaped bushing that absorbs the contact between the clutch pedal spring and the clutch pedal. most of the time i see this the clutch pedal has become worn due to the lack of a bushing. In most cases, replace the clutch pedal and bushing. This is somewhat of a ˟˟˟˟ty design.

Jay,
I checked and you are exactly right. There seems to be fragments of a bushing in there.
Even when the alcohol is talkin', you are right on the money.

Hi
I've got the same thing although I'd describe it as a "ticking" rather than a chirp. The tick accelerates as I accelerate but goes away when I put the clutch in - I suppose it's the same thing as kdeking's problem? I had the clutch replaced last xmas but never noticed until another mechanic pointed it out. As long as it'll do no harm I can live with it but if it has a cumulative negative effect then I'll have to start budgeting for it.

Yea, a little noise isnt cause for replacement. I think a normal clutch should last 80k - 120k. Just keep your ear on the throw-out bearing noise. If it is really bugging ya, replace it.
