I am starting to look into swapping manual ups into a 3rd gen runner... It seems the only 2 ways to go are either use the downey kit, or go with junk yard parts. I found a few junk yard setups, but the price was high on them... was wondering what the downey kit sells for, and if the new outboard CV joints they supply have exicter rings for ABS or not???

I will take all the input I can!

i don't know prices...but i do know that the stock AISIN manual hubs on my 89 are very strong,and very reliable....

 

ORS (off road solutions) makes a kit too.

im also thinking about doing this upgrade too. i saw a kit somewhere...marlin maybe? but it was like $1000 USD. yikes. what junkyard set ups were you looking at? we talkin like older TRD tacoma factory swap stuff? you gonna keep your abs (if so equipped?) too bad ours isnt as easy as the 2nd gens seem to be...

and speaking of the manual hub swap, is it stronger than the ADD? i've read that the add is pretty unbreakable..? or is it just more reliable/less prone to wear & breaking?

Will be having toyota check it out for me next week and I hope all is going to go well...

I get the feeling the swap kits are going to be expensive... I think I am going to get some off a Taco and swap it all in... I really dont care about ABS, so I will probably just eliminate it all together.

The ADD system is OK I guess... Its not a terrible system... I just woukd like the known reliability of the turn hubs and go... Also with lifting, I would love to not be spinning the CVs and poor angles all the time... But what I really want to do is lock the front diff... this said, I can throw an aussie or lockrite in the front and do the hub swap for about the same price as just and ARB... And to top it all off, I love hubs... I break hubs all the time in the Ford... But atleast I know with hubs as my weak point, I will not be blowing up the rest of my front diff.... I just carry an extra set with me and trail swap.... My Ford is also locked front, so I would also prefer to blow up hubs rather than axles or the locker.....

the junkyard swap kit is running about $550 right now from nix99 junkyard, member deathcougar can tell you all about it. kinda high, but that's supply and demand for ya.

then there's the labor, especially with keeping abs.

 

Well... Im not all that worries about the ABS... and my time is free to my pocket.... I have found them all for about $800 canadian here... sounds a bit high to me.... I am going to just keep looking for now.....

 

what is $800? just go to junkyards looking for the hubs and cvs off a manual hub tacoma. it'll be a heck of a lot cheaper than these kits.
