I have a 98' 4Runner and It's a manual. I like it but sometimes I get annoyed with shifting all the time with those steep gears. Can I get a used auto transmission from like a junkyard and swap it in there?

You need to swap ECU's and wiring harnesses too.
It is alot easier to go Auto to manual than vice versa.

No, its only if you go from a manual to auto you would need the ECU

You will need:
Tranny
Flywheel
You may need to either get a new crankshaft or somehow drill a hole in your crankshaft for a pilot bearing.
Pedals
Slave Cyl
Clutch

You don't need the ECU or harness but you will need the above to make it work.
I would guess you are looking at $800-1500 for that depending on if you need to change cranks.

 

yeah i am interested in this as well. my tranny just went out and i hate having an automatic. looking into swapping a manual in there

 

I've been thinking about this for some time, but I have a second genner. I know I can keep my wiring harness and ECU, but I've also though of getting a Celica with a 22re to do a major change on the truck. ECU, harness, gears and stuff. It'd be fun, but then I'd have to buy another truck to jack up and off-road so I don't get flamed

You'd think they would be considering they don't know if that motor is going into an auto or a manual.

 

Yeah that's what I was trying to say. For some reason I couldn't think of the word "machined" I kept thinking lathe, but that didn't sound right!
