maintained OD switch on 3rd Gen 4Runner

Is there a way to have the selection between OD on or off maintained between the vehicle being turned off. I don't drive on the freeway much so I'm typically not using OD. I find myself pressing the button everytime I get into the vehicle. In addition I'm reminding people who use the truck to press the button also.

Thanks

there's really no need keep the OD switch in the off position. even while ON, the tranny will only shift to OD when the speed of 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) is reached and at around 1800 rpm (in my case).

Mine is an in or out button, so I'd assume mine maintains the setting. Did they change the button in certain years?

yeah mine is an in and out switch. I find no need to mess with it unless I am towing or driving through the hill country at low speeds. Working in the shop I find some transmission failures from people messing with it all the time when they don't need to. It really wasn't designed for just high speed use or to be cruising in 3rd all the time. It is computer controlled so there is really no need to try and outsmart it.

Mine had the same thing. If you pushed it in, it stayed in. Same way on my corolla.

Well I should have said I have an '02 4Runner. The OD switch is not maintained, it is momentary.

I live in very hilly territory in norther california. If I leave it in OD it will be shifting all the time. I am under the understanding that shifting from 4rth to 3rd over and over will decrease the life of the transmission. Therefore I leave it in 3rd as I'm not on the freeway very often.

Try leaving OD on and hitting the ECT button instead to drive around the hilly areas. It allows you to maintain higher rpm's before the tranny shifts, so it may cause less up/down shifting for you in the hills, depending on how steep they are and your driving style, of course...

I think I saw on here where one guy changed the switch to one of the older style that isn't momentary. I think it was in the 3.4 swap section.
