Magnaflow round or oval
Im shopping around for a new muffler either a 24" oval casing or a 27" round casing both 2.50" inlet and outlet. Currently i have a 18" oval 2.25" inlet, 2.25" outlet. Does it make a difference in sound if the muffler is round or oval? Looking to quiet her down alittle. Thanks.

From what my exhaust guy tells me...the smaller your muffler the louder it is..
..i would assume that the square has more cu/ft than the oval or round.

i just read that again. you weren't asking about square..um which ever has less capacity/volume will be louder, not sure on tone. I believe tone is the baffling they use inside and the chambers inside the muffler.

if you want to quiet it down dont get a magnaflow. thats gonna make it louder. yes it makes a small difference. canister or round mufflers are typically louder, and smaller=louder isn't true, its bigger=louder.
go get a new exhaust guy

From experience the 24in magnaflow is quieter than the 18in. The larger the muffler is closer to stock size/volume the quieter it usually is.
Even if you had spent 15 bucks on a cherry bomb from some auto parts store it is significantly louder than stock.
..maybe smaller doesn't always=louder, but in those cases stated above it is. and i'm ok if my advice was incorrect, I should've stated IMHO before my reply if that was satisfying for you.
Do a search on Magnaflow, FLowmaster 40 or 50 series, and Classic Vortex, infact even check out Jason B's sight @Burtmansindustires.com and you'll see similar info!

i was just saying, magnaflows are not the way to go for quietness.
IMHO, for performance and quietness, i'd get cams, a test pipe in place of the cat(no emissions testing in kitsap county yet) and a stock muffler.
it will be quiet, with more power. of course this is just in theory, real numbers will vary

I was curious, is it possible to run no cat on a 2bank system? I thought with it (cat) missing the check engine light would remain on??

You have a stock muffler and you want something quieter? I'm not sure any of the aftermarket SUV mufflers are quieter than the stock. It bet it's possible to get an LS430 muffler and rig it to fit on your 4Runner. I wonder if that would be quieter. . .
