lowering question

I would like to know the best way to lower my 1992 toyota pickup. This is my first toyota and I don't know much about this subject. It has leaf springs under the axle so I was wondering if my only option was to place a metal block between the axle and spring to lower it. Any websites on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming its a 2WD (w/ SUA), if so a block would lower the rear end. You can turn down the torsion bar for the front end to lower that. More than 1-1.5" and you'll probably need to go w/ dropped spindles and do some spring work in back. Lower profile tires would work as well.

Yes 4Crawler is correct. my 94 truck is lowered 4 inchs. 3 inch blocks in back and the short thick leaf spring removed. each spring removed gives u 1 inch drop i believe. then just turn down the torsion bars in the front to lower the front. i would turn each torsion bar the same amout of turns. but i would also suggest mesuring each side to make sure its the same hieght. and with 4 inches your probaly gonna need low pro tires as well

my trucks an 85 and it used to be lowered..... same suspension setup, cranked down torsion bars, and 3" blocks in the back with 235/60/14 tires on it.....

1994 Lowered ToYoTa Pickup. 4x4 Fenders And soild 4x4 Grill, Lowerder 4 inches, 17 x 9.5 Cobra R Mustang replicas. 215x50x17 tires becuase the rims are 9.5 inches wide the 215x50 is not tall is spreads out more on the rim..... lower pro tires leave the outside edge of my rim poped out and make them easier to curb and scratch. custom seats, and radio system, Green air filter bolted right onto the MAF Sensor, factory air intake box removed, shaved head, Euro tail lights, Clear park and turn light covers, chrome rearview mirrors. take a peek

Thanks for the replys and the help. My front end is already lowered enough, it's alittle lower than jimabena74's. It was lowered when I bought it. I looked under it and it looked like it had struts on it so I guess that is the torsion bar. If so then I asume you adjust it on the top right?
I have that short spring you are talking about -ToYoTa-, I haven't thought much about removing but I will and get those 3 inch blocks you're talking about. Thanks for the link 4Crawler, it's very informative.
Very nice truck -ToYoTa-. What degree on the rear blocks should I be looking for?

i just had regular flat 3" lowering blocks..... and as for the front... there isnt struts unless someone changed something... the torsion bar is a huge bar that connects to the front lower a arm and goes back to a crossmember around the tranny area...... you might have seen shocks... as thye have regular shocks up front

You're right jimabena74, I looked behind the front wheel and found the torsion bar. I need totighten it up just a bit as the frame is sitting on the bumper pad. Thanks for the site humanoid, lot of info.

for lowering and rasing the front. u have to get under the truck to turn the torsion bar bolts. far as hitting the bumber stops i cut part of mine off, to get mine lower. i still used them cause if they are totally gone u will go threw shocks like crazy. cutting them to give it a lil lead way to move down is what u need to do. if they sit on the stops it rides rough like a go cart haha. and with out them it bounces like a pogo stick. and will stretch and cause shocks to bust. i went threw two sets of shocks fast before bying new bumper stops. only reason i removed mine was cause they had been cut off by the owner before me. it would have been easier for the guy to jsut remove them, but anyways it will cause shocks to go bad. After i cut my stops off a lil bit and gave it room to move downward. it rides good now and still let me be low as i wanted.

I also used flat blocks in the back. 3 inches is not much. if u was going more u would then need to get a angled block to keep ur drive shaft from rubbing.

the short thick lead spring is called ur load spring. i will drop it around another inch. but after removing this spring dont expect to carry anything heavy with out scrapping. if i carry anythigng remotly heavy i put it up close to the cab to even out the weight so my back end does not bottom out or scrap. u could leave that thick one in and try to remove one of the long ones. but i dunno if that would help drop it any or not.

I'd like to lower my 84 like jimabena's. How much was the front torsions turned? The guys on Customtacos.com have raved about KYB Monomax shocks for lowering applications. I'd go with drop spindles, lowering blocks & the Monomax's.

Well I got me the 3" lowering kit for the back and got in installed today, man what a job.
Next I'm gonna upgrade the radio, wifie got me a new Pioneer stereo for Christmas.
Yeah, yeah....I know there are a few dents in it but it was the dude's work truck. I'm gonna work on that next. I'm gonna change those mirrors next week when those others get here.
I'll slowly get it in shape. Thanks for all the help, I like this forum

the mirrors on my truck are probably what you want..... they are the stock mirrors. but not those big ugly ones liek you currently have... i got mine for $20 both at the junkyard..... here is a side pic you might be able to tell the difference in size.....

I was looking at a set like those on eBay, but I decided to go with these insead. Those big uglys came from wal-mart, I put them on after I tried some custom car mirrors (see avatar) that was too small.
