I'm beginning to wonder if my light works also. My last fillup, the gauge was on E for awhile but I filled up with less than 15 gallons. I believe (?) that we have a 21 gallon tank so I think maybe this gauge is just biased. I am on E again, this time I am going to push it (maybe I should fillup a 5 gallon gas can on the way to work tomorrow just in case).

I have a 96 ext cab, 3.4L auto, 4wd, btw.

The fuel sending unit is a known issue on the 5VZFE powertrain/fuel monitoring system (mainly earlier versions). When I removed the stock fuel pump for the Walbro 190 pump, I looked for obvious signs of an issue and I noticed that the float arm moved a metal tab past a series of contacts. Some of the contacts were black. I could not get the black off, but I did make them a little better by using an eraser. The contacts that were black were in the same range I was (and still am) having issues with. My issue, by the way, is that the fuel gauge goes down extremely fast between F and 1/2 a tank, then slows down significantly. The low fuel light comes on when I have 4+ gallons left. Seems like you may have the opposite problem.

You can test it, but you have to drop the fuel tank to do so. If you're going to go through all that trouble, you might as well replace it (the FSU). I think you can measure the resistance of the contacts if memory serves me right. There might be a TSB out for this issue.

I thought the low fuel light was activated by that switch cylinder looking thins that sits on the arm with the wire coiled down to it.

You might be right about that. I guess I got a little sidetracked on the FSU fuel/gauge issue...but that's a good point. If you drop the tank you might be able to check the low fuel light part as well (I have no experience with that) as mentioned.

I think it is the little cylinder thing with the copper wire coiling down to it. Can't think of any other function that thing might have.

That's correct. When the fuel level gets too low and looses contact with that cylinder that's what causes the light to go on.

you all need new fuel sending units...they wear out and get coroded thus not reading right or at all. Some even give you a false reading on how much gas you have.
