loose e-brake

Hey, forgive me if this is obvious.
The ebrake handle seems loose. It takes no pressure to pull it up around 3/4" to turn the brake light on (it clicks after that though). The braking power on the ebrake is weak too. I tried tightening the cable on the handle (which worked until I started using it), adjusting it (by going reverse and pulling ebrake, and also adjusting the rears by removing the oval black rubber piece in the back and clicking it with a philips).

Another problem I have that I think is related to this is when I start the car and begin to move I hear a squeal. This only happens at very low speeds and usually louder after I use the ebrake. I'm thinking that the rear brakes might be too tight causing the squeal.

Sorry for the lengthy note. But I had this for a month now and am too broke to go to the mechanic!
Thanks for the help.

It sounds like youre rear pads are worn out. Thus the loose brake cable and the squealing.
Maybee someone else will chime in with a better answer.

I too had this problem! My rear shoes were cracked, badly. I had them replaced along with the drum, and it got better, but the stopping power still wasn't as good as it used to be.

Just yesterday, I pulled off the rubber plug thing on the backing plate and adjusting "something" up 8 clicks. Works great now! Do a search, I'm sure you'll find the same thread I did on the click adjustment.
