loose crankshaft pully

loose crankshaft pully

i have a 1996 taco 4x4 with the 3.4 v6 and the bolt that holds in the crank shaft pully keeps comming loose. Even when i put on the red lock tight it finds a way to loosen it up. The manual says to tighten it up to 92 ftlbs and i am cranking it up to 120 ftlbs and it will still come loose every few weeks or so

and anybody know why my 5th cylinder can be misfiring with new plugs and cables it only misfires every few weeks or so

What manual says that? The FSM has a much higher torque spec, over 200 ft-lbs!

The torque spec I have is 215 ft-lbs for the crankshaft pulley on the 5VZFE. The early versions (96-98) of the 5VZFE were prone to loosening up from the factory. I heard they were using a lower torque spec back then and that's why they were loosening up (something like 185 ft-lbs IIRC). Jesus, some people torque lug nuts over 90 ft-lbs.

i was talking to somebody and they told me that when i am tightening it up i dont have a good enough hold back and that it is being absorbed so they told me to pop a impact wrench on there. the guy that told me this use to be a mech. at a toyota dealership. I double check the numbers in my manual and it says 96 ft-lbs. Maybe it is a typo and it is suppos to be 196 ft-lbs. I have also use a 3 foot breaker bar to tighten it up an it even came loose with that im pretty sure that can deliver close to or over 200 ft-lbs

If you are using a Hanes manual I've seen whole sections of procedures mixed up in that thing.

I'd use a torque wrench and hold the crank using a tool made for that porpose. There are some examples of a homemade tool for holding the crank in the timing belt write-ups. Here is one:http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timing_belt/

that seems easy enough to make so you think it is not good to use a impact wrench
