Long uhaul trip with the 4Runner

I'm thinking about picking up an old friend from colorado sometime soon. I live just outside of kansas city. I was wondering how you think the 4Runner would fair going to colorado, picking my friend up and a small uhaul trailer and coming back. At least I would be going back down in elevation with the uhaul.

I went from Florida, to Mississippi. Then from Mis. to NH, through Tenn and Va. with a 4X8 Uhaul loaded. I had no problems and was getting 15mpg avg.

Im just concerned because of the 3.0 on that long of a trip. I'd love to have a 3.4, with the trip.

I booked a 5x8 last night for my move back to my house in Houston this Friday. I'll let you know what sort of MPG I get on the 1000+ mile trip when I get to the house on Saturday. Keep in mind though my rig isn't stock.

I did a long move from Havasu AZ to northern WA in an 84 2wd EFI and pulled the largest single axel u-haul. The trailer was sitting on its bump stops. I made record time 27 hours. It went slow up hills but it flew down them. Watch your speed as you crest the hill. I got caught going to fast at the top and the trailer was swaying back and forth too much to slow down. The only way to correct it was to pull on the trailer and at the bottom of Mt. Shasta (sp) northern CA I was doing over 100mph. that was the day I found out how fast it could go and I will NEVER speed with a load again. The truck ran grate and towed good for a 22re with way to much weight. I also tried other ways of conserving fuel and the best was drafting a semi. I don’t recommend it but it was fun and I got grate gas mileage. I could feel the air push me from behind, as it would go over both of us. Be careful crazy fools like me are out there and try to take it easy. There is no rush for death we all die eventually.

For comparison, I've done an 800 mile trip with a 6x12 double axil Uhaul (their biggest) weighing around 3000 lbs. Got about 11mpg on my old '92 3.0 pick-up. I was running the A/C most of the trip and we tried to keep the speed at around 60mph, but if we went slower the milage may have been better. On a more recent 2500 mile trip with the same truck, I pulled a 500 lb 4x8 trailer and got about 14mpg, although I was driving a little faster. I think your truck will do just fine; just watch your tranny and engine temps.

You should definately get a tranny cooler if you do the trip and the 2nd gen version of the deckplate mod will help tremendously on the hills. I had a horrible experience towing with mine and trying to get out of AZ with a way overloaded 6x12 Uhaul trailer.....I will never try that again without a V8 under the hood (or at least a S/C). With a smaller 4x8 or even a 5x8 you should still be ok. Just take it very slow and watch the hills bigtime (the 4runner's brakes are not designed for that type of heat/stress).

I pulled around my 5x8 utilty trailer fully loaded about 3500 lbs when moving (100 mile trip round trip) about 10 times with my 3.slow with stock gears and 31x10.5's averaged 17mpg and the engine never moaned once. Just be considerate to it and slowly accelerate, no hot rodding. Its always easier to start than to stop, Give yourself plenty of braking room. have a fun trip!

Drove a '94 from MN to CO in '01 pulling a 16' car trailer. Got to Denver, loaded up an 85 4Runner and pulled it back.

NEVER again....

from Boston I have driven to Nova Scotia which is 14 hours north

and to Hatteras North Carolina which is also 14 hours south of Boston

I put a battery in it in NC, but never had a problem, it was great on the highway, I drove it on the hottest days out on the beach where the air temp was 95 plus, driving through sand to get to surf spots

Same thing in Nova Scotia, drove it through creeks, and on beaches during cool fall weather

the truck was great and really good over the highway...

yesterday in Boston we had 38 inches of snow!!!!! real bad driving at the beaches here, and yet again I was tooling along in my 4 Runner to go surf

My advice, change the oil, check all the regular stuff, bring tools and a full size spare and hit the road!
