I have one in my FJ40 rear, and it works really well. With the torque the straight 6 puts out, I do see jump when I come off the clutch too fast in 1st, but that is really it. Once you get used to the way it acts, its like I forget its there.

Offroad it is very impactful, especially on steep uphills with loose rock (we have a lot of that in AZ). It just grabs hold of the ground and doesn't let go. Very cool, and for relatively inexpensive.

Just to clarify.......You should never engage a full locking diff on the road (like those that were available as an option in the rear of some 4runners or units from ARB, etc), you can damage all kinds of stuff doing that. The diffs people are talking about are LSD (limited slip diffs) which are always engaged, but do slip some and can be driven on pavement without damage (although you may hear a few clicks and tire chirps here and there). The LSD tries to give you the best of both worlds, but for those doing alot of rock crawling, only a full locker would fit the bill. Both a full locker and an LSD would work well in snow too.

simon: can you please give me an update, including the following:

-how are the chirps and pops?
-how audible are they to you? with windows up and music on, do you hear it?
-how is it in the rain?
-how does your truck handle the highway? taken any longer trips (say and hr or so)?
-any new "cons" to report?

Thanks!

I am interested in a lock rite for my 97'

Was this unit priced around $240?
I read another installation review and it was unclear whether or not you have to mess with the ring and pinion clearances or backlash or whatever.
Is there any bearing removal needed? (no press needed?)

I appologize if you covered these topics, but I would like to be clear on these before I order one.

lee....heres my experiences:
-theyre there, but not too bad
-windows up music on, no
-rain, hasnt made a difference
-same as before; yes....3 hrs, not a problem at all
-only con is it does lock up on sharp turns and it sort of "takes you for a ride" but since mine is 5speed, all i do is put in clutch, and no "riding"....ur auto, but as long as you dont crawl through a uturn, you shouldnt feel it either

overall...i rate this locker at 9 outa 10....for the price, it cant be beat

and ive tested it out several times offroad....i give it a 10 outa 10 there

If you follow the driving guide it comes with and change your driving style a little, you will rarely notice it. It's easy to get accustomed to. I've had mine 3 years, and installed them for several friends who rode with me and liked the performance.

I think paid around 230 for mine shipped. As far as the install, as long as you mark everything, everything before you take it apart or touch a screw, and put everything back together by aligning the marks you don't need to worry about backlash. And yes you do have to take the bearing off, but that is where all the marking takes place. To put it another way, I did myself without having ever taken a 3rd apart before. Bolting the 3rd back in place was the hardest part.

Installing a front locker will solve the deficiency
Interesting read, but I have always noticed that I will usually lift a rear tire first as all of the weight is in the front and the front usually stays planted on the ground.

Yes, any positive throttle will lock it, regardless of direction.

If it's an 8" rear end, I guess it will. 1620 is the one in my '91 and my buddy's '86 turbo. Check the manufacturers website to be certain.
