I think the lsd would be a better choise I regreat pulling mine out and putting in an auto lockerexpectialy if its a daily driver. The lsd is a lot more cornor friendily and don't pull to the right like the auto. Just don't forget to add the GM lsd fluid works as good as auto and a lot more forgiving on turns.

Auto locker is definately cheaper - Aussie and Lockright for example. LSD is definately more road friendly.

Cons - autos make banging noises as they lock and unlock (I like that) and snow/ice is definately not a good idea with a locker. LSD - Use a truetrac or find a LSD out of a Toyota Supra - they use gears and not clutches. Better engagement and don't wear out. LSD's can be pricey but if you want the best compromise and you mostly drive on road then go for it.

I have autolockers front and rear. Loads of traction and not a problem at all on city of highway driving. I don't engage 4wd on road though and I keep the manual hubs unlocked - when you get on and off the accelerator on road in 4WD with autolockers it will pull the steering as you get on/off throttle. The very best option, though expensive, is to get lockers that you can control: Toyota electric or ARB.

Which Supra model should I be looking for? Is this for our 7.5" front or for the 8" rear?

Am not sure about the quality of Trutracs anymore. There was a thread about failures. Most failures happened after it was bought by Eaton(?).

I have a 2004 4WD Tacoma with a Powertrax No-Slip locker. It works great. Once you get used to it you hardly notice it. Got mine at Rocky-Road.com. Good price.

The Toyota LSD install was first documented by Zuk at his site: www.gearinstalls.com

If he doesn't list what vehicles it came in then I'm sure you could ask him. He posts here from time to time.

Again, if you don't need to have 4WD in winter weather on the road then an autolocker up front is an option.

I had Trutrac's f/r in my '99 4runner and I absolutely loved them. Lockup was transparent and kept you straight and true in the snow and ice, which cannot be said for most of the clutch type LSD's. In addition, you don't have to use any additives in your gear oil. Don't use synthetic gear oil either, as it will affect the behavior of the unit(i.e. it won't lock up).
Many people don't like LSD's when it comes to "wheels up" situtations, but I had no such problems. Then again I had them in the front and rear.
Price is around $450-$490.
