Limited flare/plastics removal
I finally pulled the trigger and tore off all the plastics. Both driver side panels were driving me crazy cause they would "flap" when I was on the freeway.
Anyways, for a roll on job I am pretty happy. I used durabak after reading reviews of how people with 80 series cruisers did it. Front bumper needs to be trimmed up a tad and rear bumper is being trashed. I'm gonna start working on a new one this weekend.
Before
Removal and Tape
Lots of sanding.
Holes filled with metal tape.
Time for the durabak
2 coats later
Done. (front bumper needs a little trim now)

I think you would be ok with black. Grey might be a better option... The link below is of a white 80 series with durabak on it.

Reading the Durabak site, it doesn't say anything about fading. Did any of the 80 series people report any significant fading after sun exposure or chipping? I've been thinking of getting some of the Herculiner with the UV topcoat but this Durabak looks and sounds a bit more rugged. One last question, I see they say to remove the tape immediately after the second coat, did you have any trouble with the tape peeling the Durabak off the panels or any sections that the tape didn't want to come off easily? Nice job btw!

The durabak 18 comes pre mixed with a UV protectant in it. They make an indoor use version of durabak that does not. Otherwise if you go with herculiner, you have to do an additional pass with their topcoat.
From what I have seen, herculiner has more of a sand paper texture, Durabak has more of a stucco texture. You can request a sample from durabak also on their site.
As for tape, no issues at all pulling it off. It took about 5 hours to remove the plastics, tape the inital line, sand, remove left over adhesive, sand some more, then clean with xlyene/MEK. Then to roll one side of the truck took me 12 minutes.
I did two coats, waited 15 minutes and pulled the tape while it was still tacky. One note about tape. Find this stuff:
I tried both the blue painters tape and the green painters tape you can get an an automotive store and neither would really bend correctly to do the wheel well line. With the Fineline tape I could use one strip of tape and go all they way across the truck and then just take a razor to where the doors open. Summit carries the tape. Best $7 I have spent.

So Vega what type/kind of Durabak did you use for the rocker panels? I was just looking at their website and they have a couple of different kinds of their coating, including a 4X4 exterior coating, and truck bed liner. Is it all the same stuff or is there a difference? Finally, can that blue fineline tape be purchased at a local hardware or paint store or do I have to order it from Summit?

I ended up tossing the plasitcs, about half of the plastics that held them ended up breaking during the removal. I may have kept some of the clips but will have to double check.
As for the durabak. Its the Durabak 18 (with UV) color is just black.

Also, does anyone know if you can buy the Fineline tape at a local hardware, auto, or paint store? I am hoping to find it somewhere so I don't have to order it.

I was finally able to do my rocker panels and hood this weekend. I must admit that I was nervous about using the Durabak on the rocker panels because it is pretty permanent stuff, but after seeing the results I'm really happy that I did it! I think it came out great and adds a whole new look to the truck! These aren't the best pictures, but here is how mine came out.
