I am wanting to add 2-3" of lift to my 1999 SR5 4wd 4runner. There may not be a simple answer to this questions, but here goes. I've never done any suspension mods before, so I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

Is it better to buy a lift kit (spacers, etc, like a revtek 3" lift, for instance) or is it better to just buy longer springs and shock absorbers? I'm just wondering what the purpose of "lift kits" is if you can just buy different springs and shocks to get a lift?

This has been convered many, many times. Instead of telling you to search, I'll ask you something... What do you use your 4Runner for? How much on and offroad driving? Do you tow anything?

 

Typically you will get much softer suspension with the lift kit to make for better off road handleing but worse on road handleing. You might consider this and how much time you plan on spending off road.

when you say "lift kit" you mean that buying something like the revtek 3" lift kit will offer a smooth ride for off road, but no so good for street driving, whereas getting a lift by spring replacement will offer better street smoothness, but won't be as good for offroad?

First off, you might want to change your sig, it says your engine size is a 3.6, when its really a 3.4, unless urs is different from every other 3rd gen 4runner.

I had the revtek kit on my 4Runner for about 8 months. The ride was great, just like stock or better. For the money, it is a fairly good deal. If you can buy the rear spacer and diff drop from revtek, i'll sell you the front spacers for a good price to save you some money if you decide to go that route.

Do a lot of searching. "Lift kits" are just parts assembled and sold in a package.

 

Gapguy what are the results on how much lift you got with your new setup?

 

More than 882's...lol I dont have a baseline so I couldn't tell ya. Check the thread for my measurements.
