I have heard from others that it wouldn't be, but I don't know. I don't think I'm going that route, it just looked cool in the pic.

 

I'm looking for lights that I can turn on while I'm on-road that are legal. I know fog lights are, but what about additional driving lights? Are the Hella 500's ones that you hook up for normal driving or are they strictly for off-road use?

I have them wired so I can turn them on with the running lights. The are meant to be OFFROAD USE ONLY. They are VERY BRIGHT - much brighter than the high beams. I have them aimed farther out as well.

What lights, other than fog lights can be used during normal night driving on the road?

Lee uses his Hella 500s for on road use, but I think he has them aimed down.
I only run my bumper mounted ones when no one is coming at me, or if the vehicle in front of me is way far ahead.

The 500s cast a long and wide beam, and are very bright with just the 55 watt bulb.

 

If you want to use them on road, then get the Hella 500's in a fog beam. If you want to light up stuff in the distance, then get the driving beams and use them only when other car's aren't around.

 

These seem to be very popular lights. Is there a place that I can read up on different lighting systems, such as fog, flood, driving, off-road use only, pencil beam, etc? Does Hella make a combo light for both driving and fog?

Yes, the Hella Optilux 2020. But if you want high performance, you should buy seperate fogs and driving lights. but my 2020's work fine

 

So, is there a consensus that the Hella 500 Driving lights are about the best? I haven't done enough reading on this subject yet, but I have noticed a lot of folks running those lights.

As far as fog lights or any lights for that matter, is there a certain company that seems to make the best lights all-around? Or no such thing?

No. Not necessisarily the BEST, but definitely the best BANG FOR THE BUCK. There are plenty of better lighting systems out there with adjustable beams, but none of them will be less than $200 for a pair of lights and the wiring harness. You can get Hella's off of ebay for about $55 including shipping. They come with all hardware to mount plus the wiring harness, relay and switch. You can get clear snap-on stone guards like mine for an extra $22 to protect the lenses from rock chips. That way, you don't have to keep the white covers on them all the time.

 

Any recommendation on who to get them from on ebay?

Does anyone have any suggestions for DIY stone guards or other protection for lights? My lights already have a crack, and I want to protect them better.

 

I paid about $65 for my Hella 500s locally from www.central4wd.com
I have one a few miles from me.

For the clear stone covers for the 500s and other Hella lights, I have links in my mods section on my website under the Hella 500 area.

The clear covers rock, no more messing with taking off the flimsy white covers from Hella when you use them.

btw... I settled on getting a cheap pair from auto store of future picking... Anyone got model numbers or brands they got that fit snuggly? I found a few that look like they'll fit but I won't know til after purchase.
