I did a few searches and didn't come up with any info on this subject.

I was wondering if we could start a discussion on the subject.

Has anyone here replaced their stock tail lights with LEDs?

If so could you fill us all in on how it was done, where you purchased the equipment, and what finer details we should know when doing it?

Go here for LED replacement bulbs. They list the original bulb part numbers the LEDs can replace. You should just be able to take out the regular bulb and replace it with the LED cluster.

 

Has anyone experimented with these using the stock lenses vs. clear lenses?

Curious that there isn't more info out there since a lot of the high end new cars are coming equipped with LED tail lights....

I've been thinking about doing this for sometime now. If anyone has replaced there bulbs with leds please post some pics(day/night shots if possible)

 

Hey Zach, did you put those in your Runner? I heard the size of the cluster is too big to fit in the opening of the tail housing? If you did, can you post some pics? For some reason, the Japan red bulbs I use seem to last only a few months...I've also seen a ton of Runners with one light burned out...LEDs are more permanant. Thanks.

I use to use the APC LED red bulbs for my brake/tails. But since I have the Jaos rear spoiler with LED 3rd light, it made the brake light act as a taillight and stay on. Plus, the bulbs didn't last long so I took them out. They seem to run in a circuit, so when one went bad the other one wouldn't light. I didn't like that idea.

I just put in the Eurolite L.E.D. taillights for my 2nd genereation 4runner. I have clear taillights and I needed something besides those red bulbs that faded in two weeks and looked pink. I put them in tonight and they make a huge difference. I'll have to let you know how they look in the daytime when I get a chance to check them out.

 

all of the l.e.d.'s ive tried do not fit the light hole so you need to dremel out the hole. My leds also stayed on constantly but if you have the bulb in the right place than they will work. YOu will have to wiggle the bulb while someone steps on the brakes so you can see if they work. I went to the junk yard an got some sparewiring harness and epoxied the bulbs in. My bulbs have a life time warrenty so if they go out its not a problem. To my knowledge no one makes an led that's a plug and play for the 3rd gen 4runner. But all this was worth getting a RED tail light because alaskas winters require having your lights on all the time.

Could you post some pics of your tail lights with the led. I want to see how they look b4 i do this mod

 

firefighter- do you have clear taillights? I was just wondering because I do therefore if you're trying to figure out what they look like with stock taillights I wouldn't really be able to help you. I'll try my hardest to get some pictures but it'll be tough with my schedule. One thing I can tell you about the bulbs that I have is that at night with parking lights on there is very little difference between when the parking ligts are on and when the brakes are on. I think maybe four bulbs light up a little bit brighter but that's about it. Just something you may want to take into consideration.

Apparently, the experience I had with the LED bulbs is an isolated incident. I ordered a set of APC Red LED's from nextcollection.com for use with my clear taillights when I had them. They fit fine, however, it was as if they weren't dual filament (or the LED equivalent). They would only light when the brakes were on, and not when I turned the headlights on. I exchanged them and the result was the same. I am not sure situation would be different with my 4runner than another, so I cannot explain why it works for some, and not others. I do know that they are not worth what they cost as they are just sitting in my closet collecting dust.

 

You have to make sure that you get dual filament 1157. There are single filament 1157 as I have had a pair of APC red bulbs (non led) that only worked with my running lights and not my brake lights. You just have to be very careful. Most places I looked at specified wether they were dual filament or not.

 

In both cases the packaging indicated that they were indeed dual filament.

 

I have a set in my 1st Gen but I can't remember the manufacturer off hand. They fit perfectly and are fairly bright but they don't have the spread that filament bulbs have so the bright area is very small.
