Leaking something in the back (fuel or oil?)

So I'm leaking something in the back. I thought it was my diff oil so I drained it (to my surprise there was still a lot in there, just muddy looking) and filled it back up. Now I look up and it seems like the hose that connects from where you put the gas in to the actual fuel tank is pretty wet and looks like theres liquid on there.

My questions are:

1) What can I do to troubleshoot this problem?

2) Can I just replace that hose or do I have to drain the fuel tank and everything first?

Anything else to check? Thanks!

P.S. I parked the truck in the garage and put a container underneath. Next morning I saw only about 1 or 2 drops of what looked like oil. But everytime I park my car outside, I come back out and find a decent sized wet spot underneath.

Smell it. Gas and gear oil have a very distinct smell.

I agree w/ WFO...

If you're unfamiliar w/ the difference in smells, then you should be able to tell by how it feels. Touch the drops left in the container, and rub the finger w/ the oil on it with your thumb. if it feels slippery for just a second, and then starts to go away, then it's most likely gas. (it will also feel a little cold if you blow on your finger while it's on there. If it continues to be slippery and you have to wash your hands w. soap to make it go away, it's most likely oil.

hope that helps.

sounds like a gas leak when pressure builds up in the heat it sounds like it pushes the gas out of the tank.
unless you have a differential breather run up to the gas filler door

yea I know the distinct smell between gas and gear oil. I guess there just wasn't enough for me to smell. I think I'm leaking both haha. A very small amount of diff oil and gas from the hose to the tank from the filler cap? Can I just remove the hose or do I have to empty the tank?

If you've got full access to the hose, then you will prob be alright just removing it.

I'd be very carefull about what you use in the area as far as tools are concerned. one spark in those vapors, and you'll not be a happy camper.

removing the gas from the tank may actually be more dangerous then not. when we weld/do repairs around gas tanks, we make sure that their filled up to the top w/ gas because liquid gas itself is not nearly as volatile as the vapors.

Hmmm....that makes sense. Well there's a plastic inlet hose and a metal inlet pipe. If the problem lies there, hopefully I'll just have to replace the hose cuz it's only 30 bucks, while the pipe itself is 110!! I'll be diagnosing this weekend.
