i rented one in costa rica just last year. great vehicle. we had the diesel with an automatic and it did great. we had 4 adults with luggage and it did very well in the mountains, especially monteverde, where it rained 2 days and there was mud everywhere.
plenty of power and sipped the gas. smooth ride. a good choice to rent.
have fun!

there are 5 going, and a 6th friend lives there
so 6 total on the rental, plus 1 backpack each and about 10 surfboards
we have a free place to stay and all of our time will be spent surfing so no real expenses
we are going to quepos, dominical
but will go to pavones and maybe over to mel pais, depending on how the waves are
i will post pics when i get back, there are a bunch of pics on my travel page on my website www.sfaboston.com
my friend did a more expensive costa trip,,,but can read about it here http://sfaboston.bizland.com/travelog.htm
