K&N air filter!

So I am going to get a K&N airfilter for my 4Runner. But I was wondering if there is anything that I should look for when I get one. I heard that they come pre-oiled, is this true and is there a chance that they would be over oiled out of the box. Also, I have been hearing about the Amsoil messing w/ the Mass Air Sensor, is this a concern that I should think about for the K&N filter? Just wondering. Can anyone give me any info about this before I buy one. Also, do you feel any benefits (power, milage, etc.) out of getting one? Thanks. :beaver:

K/N

Hey Ryan,

The benefit of a K/N air filter is that it will last the life of your vehicle. Yes, they come preoiled. Periodically, you will have to clean and re-oil it. Most people do not let the excess oil drain off the filter before reinstalling--that's where you can have problems. As far as performance benefits, you may not notice anything. I'm speaking from experience when it comes to engines and performance. Before getting married and having a family I played with many V8 Corvettes and Mustangs in my time. There is a "myth" when it comes to products like K/N air filters, Hyper-Chips, etc... Most people add the "claimed" horse power from these products believing they have more. You can also throw in the "placebo effect" too. Because someone spends a lot of money on these products, they think they really work awesome. I'm sorry, but these outrageous horsepower claims are a bunch of bull@#**! To get real horsepower results, you need to get into the motor. My recommendation is not to waste your money on any of that crap and leave your 4Runner stock.

Good luck,

SS77

I just pulled my KandN right out of the box and put it in. I didn't notice much difference in power. What little there was was mental I think. I did get about 10 more miles out of a tank of gas though. The main benefit you get out of the KandN was mentioned earlier you never have to ever replace it!

I got a K&N for my Honda XR650L motorcycle and did notice a considerable difference on it compared to the clogged paper filter it had before. I was impressed enough to get one for the truck also. On the truck the difference was less noticable. Something about the HP to weight ratio applies here. .75 lbs per cc on the bike, 1.5 lbs or more per cc on the truck. The slightest HP gain on the bike is twice as noticeable.

I did not gain any fuel economy with the K&N in either engine. I keep close track of mileage on both. This is a 22R carbed motor in the truck.

The other side of the coin is the fact that a K&N will let larger grit particles into your engine. This is where the debate begins. Do you go for better filtration and less airflow or worse filtration and more airflow? If I didn't already have the K&N in the truck i'd stay with genuine Toyota paper and keep the grit out, since the HP and torque gain is neglegable.

Cool, now I don't think that I will get one. You guys helped me make up my mind. I was under the assumption that they would help increase HP and fuel efficiency. But you all told me otherwise and for that I am thankful. You saved me $40 or so. I appreciate it. Thanks again! :beaver:

I have the K&N that I bought a few years back for the rig.
But after reading some of Gadget's posts about how it let flow in bigger particles of dirt, I got scared  and took it out.

I went back to the $17 paper Toyota filter.
Gotta check it soon and see how dirty it is.
I will see how much cheaper it is for the 'Net price where I bought my front passenger window switch a few weeks back, and see if they can save me some coin over my dealer that is closer.

Yeah, I read something that he sent me on ODW. I am going to stick with the stock filter. I don't want to chance anything with using one that filters less. Thanks for the tip! :beaver:
