Smile My 99 4Runner 4x4 project

So it started snowing in NJ not too long ago, and I was looking for a truck to mess around with...I found this like a half hour from me on ebay, and ended up buying it with a blown motor for $2k

When I went to check it out: SR5 4x4 with 16" wheels and what i've now found out to be tall springs! (b/p & b/y)

It was super clean with 184K on the clock!! all the electronics still worked, and the body was nice too, with minimal rust so I brought it home!

I sourced a low mileage motor an hour away from me at JDM Engine Zone in Clifton, NJ...
$1500 and a fun car ride home later with my buddy, and it's here. T-belt and all the other stuff on it looked new, but I replaced it all anyway(Pictured after new gaskets, water pump, t-belt, all tensioners and idlers replaced)

Judging by these manifolds I took off, and the way the one manifold angles down instead of straight back like a regular 3rd gen T4R, what do you guys think this came out of? The guy said it was a 2004 motor because the OEM spark plug wires had the numbers 2004 on it lol. I don't know how true this is, but I do know that the motor is really, really clean, and presumably pretty low miles. This motor had the oil cooler blocked off with an allen key plug, so maybe a 2WD Tacoma or Tundra?

Also went out to Certifit an hour away from me and picked up new front and rear chrome bumpers for a good price since mine are both rusted, back especially.

OK, lets play a game. There's two things wrong with this picture. What are they?

closer look perhaps?

yeah, t-belt snapped and wrapped around the crank, and whoever had it before me broke off the cam end lol (with 184K, i didn't want to do a full rebuild, so i'm scrapping this motor)

new and old
\

Just tonight, me and my buddy whose helping me out, got the new motor to sit in the engine bay. It took like a good half hour to get the bellhousing and motor to line up, but we did it! Going to Toyota tomorrow to get my ordered gaskets for the factory oil cooler that I need to swap onto the new motor.

Also bought some OME 890's yesterday, so i'll be piecing together a nice lift for the near future.

I'm trying to get this car running by the 25th or so, since I start classes, but I'll do what I can and post more pictures later.

so maybe this is the thread to convince folks to do timing belts in a timely manner -

As it would appear the breakage led to early demise of original motor if I understand your photo caption correctly.

Impressive work, and your truck is close to mine including color, except I have a 5sp. Hello from Somerset County! Does the clock work? (only thing on mine that doesn't)

heck yeah! It was at a used car dealership out in the sticks, but the guy there was cool, and I payed him what he asked for it so he took it off ebay. fwiw, the bid was up to $1500 with two days to go lol. I had a feeling it would be over the $2k he asked for it. If anyone that was bidding on thes car reads this, i'm kinda sorry for stealing it! haha

Yes sir. I didn't get to see the crank pulley/belt until after the engine was plucked out so I had no idea it would be so wierd... That belt is so tight around that crank that there was no way it'd spin again after it happened. and I can only wonder what happened to that cam end...

Yeah, it worked when the battery was in. I don't know about my rear wiper though. I forgot to test that when it was all snowed in

Looks like the cam siezed then the belt broke. These are non interferance motors. so if it was just the belt it may have been okay. It may have had an oil starvation problem. Either way that motor dont look pretty.

I agree, sort of. Something seized, then crank and belt ripped pulley off, then belt got wrapped around crank and shredded. It would be fun to look under that valve cover. The WP may have seized, locking one side of the belt and thus breaking the camshaft. If I am right, it's a mess behind that fake WP. All respect to Ron, I do not see how an aged belt can break a cam pulley off all by itself in a solo fail. I think it had help. If it were just the belt that were failing, I would think you would just lose/jump time and engine would stop before you broke a shaft off. This might be the thread that shows why you should swap out your WP.

got lazy and didn't update when I said I would lol...I've got 285/75/16's in the garage and I'm still waiting on my OME Sport Shocks and 881's with TO spacer and 890's. The front and rear metal bumpers were replaced with Certifit bumpers, and it was such a pain since all the bolts were rusted and broke off. We ended up going to the hardware shop and refitting it with 10mm nut and bolts.

Here's some pictures of the car in a school parking lot:

By the way, I finished this truck up and got it registered/insured like one day before the east coast blizzards so I had a ton of fun ripping it in H4 AND H4L when 12"+ came down. First time having a 4x4 so it was great.

I also went to Assunpink Lake in Central Jersey yesterday and hit up some snow filled dirt trails...I don't know why, but I impulsively went there alone when I was bored and wheeled through it all. Good thing I didn't get stuck cuz I didn't have any gear to get unstuck hahaha My adrenaline was pumping so hard when I made it through the wooded/snow covered trails!

4Runner FOR TEH WIN!!
