Whats the story with these chips?

I don't know about other ECU, but as far as I know the chips used inside the Toyota truck engines are not the type that can be re-written. Once they are programed at the factory that is it.

Even Toyota can not reprogram them. If there is an error in the program, the entire ECU must be replaced.

Many other Japanes ECUs are the same way. My 95 Maxima has a error in the ECU that only surfaces when starting. If you release the key prior to complete start and then try to restart it right away, the ignition timing becomes so advanced that it is very hard to crank the engine. The fix is to replace the entire ECU since it can not be reprogrammed.

There is an aftermarket company called Techtom that modifies Japanese ECUs. They have to modify them because the chips CAN NOT BE REPROGRAMED. They physically remove the main chip from the main board and install a ROM board that will accept a replaceable EPROM, the type that can be reprogrammed. They have to go to this extream because they stock chips can not be reporgrammed.

So, what does JET do? As far as I can tell, nothing, well other then putting stickers on the ECU. I had mine done by JET back in 96 of 97 and there was no change in anything. I have two ECU and kept swapping them back and forth and never noticed any difference at all.

So, when you add all this info up it is easy to conclude that JET maybe just flat ripping people off.

The 4th gens may have a re-programmable ECU. Check with the dealership. My mom's 2003 ES300 had a recall where they had to reprogram the ecu for transmission shift points.

If it is just a piggy-back chip upgrade, it won't do much except drain your checking account.

You maybe right.

A couple of years ago, the EPA found a problem with a bunch of different Toyotas and it was related to the ECU. The only true fix was to replace the ECUs on thousands and thousands of Toyota because they could not be reprogramed to fix the issue. They worked out some kind of settlement with EPA and did not have to replace all of those ECUs.

Since that happened it has been rumored that Toyota was thinking of switching to an ECU that they can reprogram if this happens again in the future. It is really a good idea.

Toyota does have a few ECUs that can be reprogramed as far as I know. They are very few and are the joint production cars they do with GM.

I do hope that the new ECUs are reprogamable. That will make aftermarket tuning so much easier.

To twist this a bit, a lot of folks here have added this product to their rigs and are enjoying the benfits:

One of the longest threads on the forum details the last few months of folks doing this:

fwiw, I love mine. But, to be fair, I don't think anyone's tried to install it yet on a 2003 V8.
