I have been living in Japan for the last 5 years and I have been getting tons of parts for my friends in the states. Everyone knows they have different stuff for every car here that you can't get in the states. My question is, what are the parts that are desirable for the 3rd gen 4Runner, if any? I am moving back to the states in May and I can bring some parts with me. I know JAOS or something like that is popular over here but I have no clue. I always hook people up with hard to get parts for cheap but now with the dollar sucking over here, is expensive. So what parts should I look for? Thanks in advance, btw this is the best forum I have ever been on!

the most popular parts by far seem to be inclinometer/altimeters and field monitor units [those electronic compass/altimeter gizmos above the rear view mirror.
The rare GPS ones are nice but their data base does not recognize non Japanese locations so would be useless unless you can come up with a way to update the database for other locations, I have the feeling it uses the ground based augmenter stations for signal so this may be impossible.
Other common goodies are the different front corner light assemblies, side mount turn signal repeaters, front wing mirrors and of course HILUX SURF badges.
JAOS products you already mentioned.

yep, i'll take a 3rd gen tire carrier and rear hatch please i'm still on the lookout for those parts but no one wants to ship them, and i honestly don't blame them. i would say those inclinometers are on everybody's wish list, don't forget the temp sender if you can find it!

 

Aweosme thanks guys! Yeah shipping anything big is a pain. I usually got smaller items so they didn't cost so much to ship. The inclinometers are a dime a dozen. I am sure I can get one from a junk yard. I will let you know what I find.

 

FWIW I'll take a set of 4 of those Jaos mudflaps with the steel bottom edge in Yellow or Silver if you come across any at a reasonable price lol...
and if you find one of the FMUs in a vehicle without the sunroof controls I'd be interested lol*2

 

temp sensors and inclometers for shure, don't matter what year really

 

maybe a little demand for the rear hatch ladders not sure....

 

So I can't find the altimeter anywhere for the Hilux Surf! I thought they would be easy to get. I stopped by the local bone yard and they had 12 Surfs. All the Pajeros and some other SUVs had them. Bummer.

 

Hey Topsecret I see a few parts I'd be interested in lol... those orange side turn signal lights on that surf in the pic. If they are the square ones held on by two screws.
And if you come across any leather wrap 5spd shifters/transfercase shifters.
maybe those front corner lights with both light harnesses from the second pic lol

FWIW those Pajero altimeters could be probably be reworked into the lower dash of our trucks.

 

I two am curious about the pajero altim and a 5 speed blue shift knob for a 2nd or whatever if it fits

 

i see a part id like to have off that 2nd gen surf, the fender mirror. if you can find one off a third gen that would be awesome. and as AV said the electronic field monitor for a third gen would be awesome. thanks a million

I see in the surf picture those fender flares also the window deflectors that may be of use to someone over here-

I realize shipping those might be cost prohibitive...

 

If anybody is still interested, I should be able to get a few of these things including;
-fender mirror (universal fit exactly like the one on that 4Runner)
-side marker lights/signal lights on fender (not corner lights)
-reproduction JDM 90-95 4Runner fender flares the same as these pictured
-possibly "Hilux Surf" badges, but need to check but "Hilux" is available for sure

Let me know if anybody is interested in any of this stuff and I can look into it further.
