Installing tire carrier parts onto a non tire carrier tailgate.

I think that all of the 2nd gen 4runner tailgates were molded the same. The tailgate tire carrier was an extra and with the few extra holes drilled into it you had the tailgate tire carrier model or like mine you didnt. Well I found a tailgate w/tire carrier. The tail gate has damage and I have pricey decals on mine. So today I gutted the one I bought to get all of the carrier mounts. I matched the two tailgates up and it looks as if with a little drilling I will have no problems mounting the tire carrier to my rig. A little wiring adjustment will take place aswell. I do not have access to a welder so I may just take and triple up on fender washers to mount the carrier to the pass. rear corner of blue. The rest is a cake walk. Pics coming soon. I have the tailgate if anyone within Washington wants it. I will not ship it. $150 & its yours. Has a slight curl on the bottom of the drivers side with the trade of some paint on the bottom of the pass. side. Paint cracked at where the edge is curled.

If I were you, I'd make some backing plates instead of using fender washers. Get some 16 ga 2"-3" bar, drill the hole and pound it with a mini-sledge to shape to fit the inside contour of your pass rear corner. It will hold much better than fender washers which will deform pretty easily.

Go to trailtoys.com and read Chris Geigers write up on this mod. He put one on his 93 4runner. A little more involved than drilling a few holes.

I was just doing to say that you will need new mounts for reversal lights and your license plate, but I assume you figured that part out already.

The gate is molded the same, but everything is placed differently.

That writeup looks very helpful.

So good luck with it!

The write up is limited. I have gutted the tail gate the carrier came off of. I do not have to remount the tirecarrier style back up lights being I have alternate lighting below my bumper. the lic. plate holder is on the tire carrier, and I have all of the bracketing. just drilling and tack welding and it should be good to go.

If you need photos of anything on the original setup, I can take some for you.

No photos are not need but measurments might be. Could you give me the measurments from the top & bottom of the tail light? I just want to make sure I drill it in the correct location. I have the original tailgate still for measuring purposes. Thanks
