power antenna acting up?... (long one)
hello everyone
great site..
this is my first post here...
anywayz my power antenna is acting up.
i searched the site and figured mine just died too..
it hasnt been working for over a month, then yesterday and today
while on the highway it came back to life, then died, then came back, then died...on and on...
everytime it came on/off there was a clicking behing the driver side dash,
is there a relay or something that could be bad back there?
i took the dash apart all ready, and made sure the radio connections were tight.. took off the splash guard inside the fender and checked those connections too..?
any ideas would be great.
thanks.
btw, i just changed my fuel filter yesterday (116k) and have noticed a huge difference, more responsive off the start and at speed, better mileage too!!

Welcome to the forum! When you say it dies then comes back - are you talking about the antenna being able to move up and down, or are you talking about radio reception vs. no reception?
If its just the antenna being able to go up/down, chances are the zip line is missing teeth and you need to replace the antenna mast - that is, if you still want to go with a power antenna. You can also replace it completely with a fixed whip antenna. Have a look around, there's many posts on both things. Actually I just replaced my antenna mast last week.

I have a working power antenna assembly off a 1996 4Runner SR5 4WD. Since I had the dash already disassembled to install a stereo, I decided to replace the power unit with a fixed one.
I was going to post it to ebay, but make me a reasonable offer.

thanks.
the antenna goes up and down no problem when it gets juice, but once it clicks off, it just seems like it isnt getting power, and then all of a sudden something behind the dash clicks (a relay?) and the thing works perfectly. click click is the clue... could it have something to do with my clifford alarm? maybe thats it...

clicking sound is prolly ur relay thinking it's up or down. try spraying WD40 on the antenna and manually pull it in and outto flush out the gunk between the rods and that usually takes care of it that's for most common power antenna problem unless ur problem is with the power unit itself.
