Hey guys, I'm doing some research for a school project and I need to find out what everybody normally breaks on the trails. So if you guys could, please state the following:

1) Make/Model/Year/Mileage Of Your Rig
2) Type of Trails You Drive (Easy, Moderate, Difficult)

Easy - Relatively easy terrain, minimal ground clearance required.

Moderate - Moderate level terrain, rutted trails, with possible clearance problems, ditch crossings.

Difficult - Most difficult terrain, definite clearance issues, large vehicle articulations, possible roll over situations.

3) Name anything and everything that you've broken and how you broke it.

Mods I don't know if it's ok to put this in this forum, but is there anyway to sticky this for just a couple weeks? It's kinda important.

Moderate

On Trail
1 CV joint- Too much brakes when wheel was off the round and spinning
Punctured a tire
2 Tow Straps
Ripped 1st CB antenna off -Oh well, the tree kept me from rolling down a hill.

Replaced:
Steering Rack (2x)
Rear Axel Seals
on 3rd set of brakes

Thats it, I'll add if I think of anything else

ripped CB antennae off
big dent in stock bumper from tree
wheel bearings replaced due to water
ripped the skid off (you have a vid of that one!)

 

1) 2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD ~65,000 miles
2) Moderate mostly. Moving to more and more difficult.
3) CV axle - too much wheelspin on loose, rocky dirt
Front Differential Gears/Carrier - too much wheelspin on steep, loose dirt

 

1. 99 4runner 4wd Limited currently w/ 123k miles
2. Heavy Moderate to Lightly Difficult
3. a) Dented rear bumper departing a large rock at Tellico
b) Ripped rear fender flare mount on clay embankment at Tellico
c) Heavy Scratches in rear quarter and flare on same clay embankment
d) Broken Tail Light on same clay embankment

that's it other than general light scratches on both bumpers and dented skids on the front diff, XF case, and gas tank. oh, and i ripped off my trailer wiring harness on a departure. it got pinched b/w a rock and the hitch as i slid down the rock.

 

I think you would get much better results if you tried this survey on a Jeep Forum. (Much more Data)

1985 sr5 runner 200k + original miles, on another engine though, 7" suspention lift locked in rear on 35" mt's, do mostly difficult trails, some moderate, ive lost a tail light, and put some dings and dents in it, smoked a clutch on slickrock, still yet to replace, thats it, dont drive it like an ass and your not so prone to breaking things

Rancho limiting straps for rear suspension - threads came out
Rockstomper swaybar disconnects - broke crossing a street median
Hmmmmmm, probably more, can think right now

 

On the 4runner, nothing, yet...

1. 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0, 135,000 miles
2. Moderate - Difficult
3. -1 front driveshaft, hopped onto a pointy boulder
-multiple U-joints grenading going from low to high-traction situations quickly.
-passenger side doors got huge gouges from a protruding root on a way off-camber hill
- upper control arms (1 front, 1 rear) ripped off the "frame" (the brackets did, and it still drove out just fine )
- smashed front headlight and turnsignal from sliding into a tree stump (got the ARB bumper a month too late )
- moderately crushed rockers from see-sawing over a rock ledge, got the sliders the next month, i learn from my mistakes
-the LockRight locker in the back broke, somehow...freaking Dana 35 axle...

i think that's all...i kinda miss the Heep...hopefully the Runner will be that built, someday...

Destroyed factory skidplate (www.sayersbrook.com)

OEM rims thrashed to ˟˟˟˟˟

removed front bumper valance (forcable) @ quarry in Augusta MO

85 SR5 pickup 5sp - difficult - stock - never broke anything

85 4Runner 22RE 5sp 4" LIFT TRD posis 4:88s 33s - Hardcore - Destryoed tye rear bumper. Never broke anything on the trails except an alternator belt. Oh and a swaybar end link while jumping on the dunes. (4" susp kit gives about 5.5" uptravel, if you put in the extended links you have the stock 1.5 uptravel for the links. Stoopid.) Lots of body damage tho.

90 Xtracab 3.0 5sp 4" susp 3" BL 5.29s 35s rear truetrac - moderate - CVs.

Trail difficulty: average - no articulation here just MUD and water and it's DEEP.
Nothing because im careful - however my tranny has been severly afflicted ever since from the tranny sucking water...

3) twisted rear bumper, torn cv boots

2) Moderate to difficult 50/50
3) CV joints twice - caused by torsion bar lift with no manual hubs
Steering spindle bushings - not while wheeling, but I'm sure it was a factor
Beat up skid plate - caused by general off-road abuse
Small dent in rear bumper - backed into a rock

1) Toyota 4Runner, 1998, 93,000 miles
2) Moderate to difficult 50/50
3) Bent running board - Front tire went into deep rut on an off-camber hill climb. Vehicle listed toward that side transferring all weight to the running board.

3) Running boards bended on rocks, front and rear bumpers scraped on rocks, sand, mud, etc. Front and gas skidplate bend and messed up on rocks, sand, mud, etc. Exhaust tip bend on rocks, the bend down by backing up in mud.

Trails I run are easy to mod being there are no hard trails here.
I have broken the following
Fan shroud was cracked but the rough terrain broke it all the way through up top.
Ball joints from jumping my rig at the dunes
idler arm from decending down a trail and dropping into a hole that rigs dug when trying to go up.
thats it for broken stuff on my rig.
