Allright, the tricky thing is that 4wd rear ends have an 8 inch ring ring. However, the 2wd rear ends usually have a 7.5 inch ring gear. So a 2wd differential most likely isn't going to fit a 4wd, though there are probably a few exceptions. Sorry no one has mentioned this before, I guess it slip our collective yotatech mind . So, what you need is a third member with your gearing (most likely 4.10, though you need to check, 4crawler's site tells you how to), from a 4wd axle, with an 8 inch ring gear. Oh yeah, bubba, you aren't asking idiot questions at all. It's a relief from the real idiot questions .

I'm glad you didn't buy one! Why don't you check the classified section at http://pirate4x4.com/forum ? They usually have a few for sale around your part of the country.

It would cost @ $65-75 to have a 3rd shipped to you form who ever.
Be sure you know what you have first.
Here is a link that can give info.
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html
If you have a 22RE and runnig 33" tires, then you really should be geared with 4.88 or even better 5.29.
But that would get expensive.
If you are not wheeling, then just find the correct 3rd.
I would be sure that the truck hasn't been re-geared though.
Another link.

ZUK talks about Aussie install.
http://zukaz.tripod.com/tommyinstall.htm
Good luck.
Been research this stuff myself with help from Yota members.
Thanks ALL!!!

k guys. I found a guy with a v-6 third member. He say's it is bone stock, but he thinks it has STOCK 4.11 gears.

I'm pretty sure mine has 4.10. I looked at how to tell what gears i have, by spinning the tire one rotation, and counting the driveshaft rotation. My concern is that there is no way on earth i will be able to tell 4.1 rotations from 4.11 rotations! I'm pretty sure i have 4.10's, but would like to be positive.

Also, what is the chance that the "4.11's" this guy has are really 4.10's? Did they ever actually offer 4.11's? It wouldn't make sence to make 2 gears so similar.... would it?

thanks. Any input is needed and appritiated.

Btw- i checked out(and studied!) those websites. Very informative!

Yes, there is a 4.11 ratio found in some toyotas. 4.10s are way more common, though. I don't think they ever put 4.11 in a v6 third. The two ratios are close enough that it will be fine to run them together. A lot of domestic vehicles have come with a different ratio in the front and rear. Supposedly, as long as they are within 10% or so of each other they will be fine. The difference between a 4.10 and a 4.11 is going to be so close it won't matter.

Here we go, I got out the calculator here. A 4.10 has 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion gear. A 4.11 has 37 teeth on the ring gear and a 9 tooth pinion. Same darn thing, pretty much. Supposedly, fewer ring gear teeth=stronger and more pinion teeth=stronger. I don't know why toyota would have made a 4.10 and a 4.11, who knows?

I got the v-6 third member with the 4.11's for 100 bucks. Will be back and driving tomorrow!

Allright man! That isn't a bad deal at all. Those v6 3rds can run pretty high sometimes. Now we just need to get you a rear lunchbox locker, and you'll be set!

Ha. I'm keeping my eye out!

Hey. last question.......I PROMISE (dont take that promise too seriously!)

My driveshaft has a ding in it, and it will no longer telescope at ALL. I've pounded it, hit it, banged it.....everything. That sucker will not budge! Wether or not that is what made my rear diff go out, i think i should replace it asap!

Are there any other driveshafts that work?(ie, 2wd, other 4*4 yotas or any other make vehicle?) If not, what is a reasonable price to pay for a used yota one?

thanks again!

Where is the ding? Must be pretty big to mess up the slip yoke. Any shaft from a 4x4 of the same wheel base would work for you. Or, any competent driveline shop can repair it for you. If its just the slip yoke end that is damaged, just get a matching bottom end of the same length. And ion the future, put the slip yoke at the t-case end, keeps it up out of harm's way.

the slip yoke IS at the t-case end!!!!

Damn those MEXICAN trails!!!!! Driving a trail in mexico(in the mud) and the truck slid off the trail, and fell into a huge hole. The middle of my truck just happened to hit the high point between the top of the trail and the hole.(dented the part below my door, and i'm assuming this is when my driveshaft got dinged).

Long story short, i took it to two driveshaft shops, and neither one could "fix" it for under 300!

So, basically a 2wd driveshaft won't work?(i know.... dumb question....) or any other driveshaft from another vehicle?

thanks!

2WD drive shafts have the slip yoke inside the tranny output shaft. You would need a 4WD shaft. Any SWB pickup or 4Runner ('84+) should work.

Or try another shop, like High Angle Driveline.

ok. I just got the v6 third member.

I think that has a different bolt pattern than the 4cyl. driveshaft. Now do i HAVE to get a v-6 driveshaft, or can i modify/use a 4cyl one?

thanks!!!

A few choices, swap flanges, get a V6 shaft (at least the bottom end) and swap with your 4-cyl shaft. OR redrill the V6 flange to accept the 4-cyl bolt pattern. I use a jig to line up the two flanges, but you can also use the 4-cyl driveshaft end as your jig. Rotate the flanges so the new holes are mid-way between the old holes:
