Im confused about sizes here
i know it says in the door but im confused, on my 1997 it says it has 15x7 rims and 225 tires, i have 16x7 rims and 265 tho, and they look stock and i didnt think that 15" rims fit over the brakes on the 3rd gens? so whats the actual stock sizes

These the 265/70/16 is the stock size and teh speedo should be correct. Some ppl on here though have said that there speed was actually corrected when uping the size to 265/75/16. I have found that my speedo now reads correct as well with the 265/75's.

I just replaced my 265/70-16 with some new 265/75-16 nitto's, and my speedo is spot on according to gps and various speed displaying signs along the road.

Our 97 came stock with 16's and 265/70.
It lists a 16 inch rim and 265/70 on the door jamb sticker.
The speedo was dead on before the larger tire sizes.
Your truck came stock with the small stuff. The big stuff was added later.

my door sticker also says 15 inch wheels, but i know that is a lie, because i definitely have the larger brakes.
check to see which size brakes you have, do they just clear the wheel, or is there quite a bit of gap.
really only the base model 4runners came with 15 inch wheels (non sr5) and maybe very few sr5's in 2wd.
i cant tell you whether or not yours came stock with the 265/70r16 tires. one way you might be able to tell is by doing this:
find your REAL ACTUAL gear ratio in the rear diff. search on here on how to do it exactly, but basically mark the dshaft, mark the tire, with one tire in the air, rotate tire 20 times and count the dshaft revolutions, divide by 20 and you have your ratio. you can also get the axle code off of your door, compare it to this chart, and find the ratio you have. though that chart is quite ambiguous.
here is the chart:
http://www.sonoransteel.com/Toyota_axle_codes.html
it is also possible someone in the past has regeared your 4runner. i do not know whether you are the original owner or not. this is why it is helpful to actually count the revolutions
also, speedo's are allowed to report speed 3% higher than actual speed, but cannot report a speed less than the car is traveling. (this keeps you going at or below the speed limit)
