How to use / What to buy OBD Device

Hi,

I'm needing to get an OBD device to diagnose a check engine light on my 98 4runner.

For the experts on this board:
1) what should i look for in an OBD device - it seems there are a wide variety of prices and features

2) where do i plug it in on my 4runner? is there a pic somewhere on this?

3) any other tips / experiences / lessons learned?

Thanks a bunch.

Not an expert, but I wrench a lot. I bought the mid level Actron CP9180 Scanner from Autozone. It will read and clear codes, live data, pretty good tool for under $200.00. Not a 100% sure on the 4 Runner, but the plug is usually by your right knee under the dash. See the link below. There are cheaper units, but less features.

This is what I got after I swapped in my 3.4:

I assume you have a laptop or access to one. If not, the products this company sells might not be as cost effective as they were for me. I don't use it all the time, but have found it a very helpful tool for troubleshooting.

If you want a stand alone reader- get a scanguage
http://www.scangauge.com/
- It will do more than just clear codes- you can actually use it on a daily basis for your vehicle

If you have an old laptop or comp in the garage -
get this
http://obddiagnostics.com/

I have both units

For pre OBD II/96 vehicles:
paper clip to jumper the diagnostic port? (count the CEL blinks)
