actually, depending on the kind of yota, my old 85 runner one didn't screw off. ripped off and I was left with a crappy little white plastic knob (it was under the actual black shift knob).

 

The one in my '85 screws off and on. All the manual trannys I have seen in Toyota trucks have screw on shift knobs (M12-1.25 right hand threads). The threads inside the knob are plastic so it may be that the knob was screwed on very tightly such that the threads were somewhat deformed and that has it stuck.

 

yeah, i figured it was lefty loosy. i tried that, and the thing won't budge. rather aggrivated. lol. but! thanks for reassuring me i am a complete tool! haha! by the way, it's a 98 runner.

 

You broke the knob. As Roger said, all Toy manual shifters are screw off.

 

just hold it really tightly and twist left. it'll give eventually, it was really hard the first time i had to take mine off.

thank you very much everyone. i shall continue to work it. lol. i just wanted to verify that it indeed just twisted left to come off before i snapped the thing off. i appreciate the reply's to such a retarded question. lol.

 

when i tried to get mine off the first time in my 92 its was a big PITA, but once i held/supported the shift stick to the right (while in N) and then gave a good lefty loosy it came off with no hassle. worse comes to worse maybe try and heat it up a tad with a hairdryer to loosen it up...just like a jar of dill pickles!

LMFAO! will do. just wanted to make sure i didn't miss a screw or something. probably didn't help that it was about 28 degree out and the truck hadn't been started at that time. so perhaps my nancy hands were a little more nancy-like due to the cold. ??? maybe? yeah! i am going with that! LOL!

well, heath...i tried to contact you, but obviously the wife had you on a leash all day. LOL! the chiltons is less than helpful on this topic. and as i said, i wasn't really in the mood to mess with it in the snow yesterday, and after trying, i decided to just ask. I do apologize for not meeting up to the standards LOL. i should be slapped on the typing fingers with a ruler by and angry nun! HAHA!

 

Yeah, we went out and cut a Christmas tree, of course, before I brought it in the house, I snuck out for a little 4runner time (trying like hell to be ready for this weekend). If it matters I sheared the shifter off on mine trying to take it off. So now the shaft kinda floats on the shaft connected to the trans. (i use the grove that holds the boot up to keep it from just pulling off in my hand) getto i konw
