Awesome writeup!

I just have a couple of quick questions:
1) If I am planning on dropping the pan so I also have to flush it?
2) How often should the pan be dropped and cleaned?
3) How often should the transmission be flushed?

Thanks!!!

I don't understand #1, maybe reword that one.
#2 I'd say about every 100K miles
#3 depends on fluid type (synthetic or dino), temps it has been run at, towing, etc...

#1 Should have been: If I am planning on dropping the pan, cleaning the filter, etc. do I also have to flush the old transmission fluid as described in the writeup? If it is not manditory to do the flush, is it still a good idea?
#2 Awesome!
#3 I am running synthetic and I don't do a lot of towing, maybe 1-2 times per year.

Thanks!!

#1 I'd say depends on how long its been since the ATF was flushed, probably a good idea if you don't know.

This should help with #1 and #3, its all about temps the ATF is seeing: https://www.yotatech.com/51451387-post283.html

Awesome! Thanks for all the help! What brand/type of ATF should I use? Toyota OEM only?

I'm not sure on a 02 4runner, Toyota changed the ATF spec around that time. Check your owners manual, it may be the newer Toyota type T. Mine just specs Dex III.

Pull out the dipstick and it will say Dex II, III. Or consult your owner's manual. I do not know about type T in the A340s but I trust Dale's knowledge on that one. Once you flush it, I'd only drain the ATF every 25,000to 40,000 miles depending on the severity of conditions your 4 runner operates in.

I dropped the pan, cleaned it, changed out the filter, let the sealer dry for about 15 hrs before putting 4.3 qts of new ATF in it. Drove about 500 miles, then did a flush of 16 qts of Redline D4. Shifts so smoothly now.

IMO, good ATF options if your transmission requires Dex:
Castrol Import ATF: the best bang for the buck under $5 qt. I used this before using the Redline and it did extremely well.
Valvoline Maxlife: cheapest synthetic had for about $5.30qt. Others say it does a good job. I think you can get a case at Autozone for $66.
Dextron VI: either Castrol or Valvoline.
Amsoil ATF, Redline D4, or Eneos Synthetic ATF: all good quality full synthetics. Not cheap but Redline can be found in a case on sale now and again. I think NAPA is about to start carrying Eneos lubricants. Look at the newest bottle of Mobil 1 ATF (black I think) and see if they recommend it for Toyotas. Their older fully synthetic ATF worked great in other Aisin Warner transmissions I used it in.
