anyone add hood struts/shocks? seems like a good mod for convenience, but is it possible?

They have them on Lexus, I wouldn't see why it couldn't be done, you could just order the Lexus struts, or find one and take some measurements and see if they would work, the hood weight might be the only down side of the equation. Wish I had more insight for ya. BUMP and good luck.

That would be my choice to look at.
Make sure you don't get a strut that is so strong it bends the hood though.

 

Ive never seen where the Trundra shocks mount up. I am sure this can be fabbed up fairly easily. Go for it Amir, then pm me with part #s when you have everything installed and working right

 

yea i can picture it now, all set up, you close the hood. Next time you need to jump someones jeep, you pull the latch, and the hood flies off in the air 20 feet behind the truck

 

dang, that would suck! ill see what i can come up with as far as toyota struts.

 

I've started working on this mod again, and will have a kit available.

Rancho used to make these and then stopped. I honestly think they were bending hoods. The 4Runner hood is very thin on the sides, unlike most.

There is a lot on engineering that goes into this (I've already spent hours), and I'm not going to sell anything until I'm 100% sure it will work and 100% happy with the design. I'm trying to dedicate more time to this project as I have more free time at the moment. When I have the final design, I will let you all know.

The Tundra and 4Runner hoods are completely different.

This was what I was worried about (bending), but I am sure you can get around it with bracing in the case worst scenario. As long as the force is distributed it should not bend the hood. You also don't want the struts strong enough that the hood flies up when the latch is pulled. The struts should just be able to support the weight of the hood not much else. The hood does have some reinforcement to tie to as you can see in this pic (sorry it's so big...thanks ebay!):

This guy also owns a 4Runner with Chevy 350 in it. Im going to talk to him about possibly developing a 4Runner kit..
