Well, over several years I would assume it would.

Im sure it is there for a reason, if not then car manufactures wouldnt be putting it on in the first place right?

I didn't have any hood insulation on my '96 when I bought it. Don't know about other '96s or whether it's just mine?

My '97 doesn't either, nor does my dad's '96, so i guess gen 3's don't have the insulation.

Hood insulation on 4R's begain in either 98 or 99. Many people have done a retro-fit. I've heard it reduces the noise significantly also.

Of all my Toyota trucks that Ive owned,
93 22RE 4x4 truck, no insulation on hood
94 4-Runner 3.0 v-6, had insulation
95 Tacoma 2.7 4x4, no insulation
98 4-Runner Limited 4x4 3.4, no insulation which really suprised me. The 94 4-runner engine noise was definitely quieter than my 98. I think it also keeps the hood from vibrating while criusing on the highway. The only thing I can say good about not having the insulated hood is that snow melts off the hood from the engine heat.

My '91 4Runner has it, although it's beginning to fall apart (the insulation not the truck )

Dynamat Hoodliner

They used to make something called Dynamat Hoodliner. It was basically black open cell foam (like pipe insulation except flat) with a foil membrane on the engine side. I'll check around to see if they still make it.

Here ya go.

They don't have a specific URL for the page with the hoodliner, you'll just have to surf. Look under products.

The insulation was not factory installed until around 99.

I put it in my 96. It is about $100 from www.Partznet.com. You will need to order the clips separately. The one for the scooped hood is different so keep that in mind.

If yours fell off you might just need to get new clips for it. Nothing will be harmed if you leave it off as there are lots of 3rd Gens running around without it.

My 90 p/u doesn't have it. I didn't worry about it till a couple of weekends ago when mud would get on the hoot is would produce a steam and eventually dry the mud out. This was probably because of how friggen cold it was outside. I was thinking about the whole hoodliner thing myself.

Want to know why that stuff is there?

There are two reasons...

1. Sound deadening. This is an after effect and is not the reason for it being there.

2. The clips that hold it in place are "fuses". In the event of an engine fire, they melt and the matting is supposed to drop onto the engine, smothering the flame.

As it turns out, this is an old idea and under certain, very specific fire types, it actually works. But, 90% of the time it doesn't really help, so most manufacturers have done away with it. It gets filthy and doesn't tend do what it's supposed to do anyway.

So, you can remove it without a problem. In fact, all the newer Tacoma's don't have it to begin with... Some of us use the underside of our hoods to display all those stickers that come with all the mods we buy

I don't have it in mine and it's super quite at idle for sure.

At WOT I can hear it but it sounds great, (deckplate mod).

The only bad thing about the hood insulation is that your engine will probably run a little ~hotter~.

I thought about getting it but then remembered how muddy that part of my truck was after a weekend of playing in the mud. Scratch that idea. too much cleaning.
