Here's the deal: My '89 sr5 v6 xtracab has been idling higher and higher. I figured it must be a vacuum leak or something, so i took it to a shop. After looking it over, the mechanic is telling me that the throttle body is worn out and sticking, thus the nearly 2000 rpm idle. The big shock is he says the entire throttle body must be purchased (at just over $500), since toyota doesn't sell the worn out parts individually.

Is this true? If so, would it be worth my time to look for a salvaged part? Any help / advice is appreciated.

i'm not sure. it seems to be, but if i push kinda hard counter-clockwise against the throttle assembly i can get the idle to drop just a little.

 

You can check the leak at the throttle (with the engine running) by spraying some carb cleaner where it pivots and if the idle goes down, you know it is a leak there. If not I would keep looking at other possibilities. Does your throttle have an adjustable set screw as well? If so you can temporarily compensate for it but that would just be a bandaid for the true problem. If you need a throttle body, get one from a junkyard first...much, much cheaper.

Mine was worn and cause the same result. I got a used one at a junk yard for $60. DO NOT pay $500! You can even get a hoigh performance big boar one from LC engineering for about $300.

 

You might be able to simply resolve the problem by removing the TB and cleaning both sides, then reinstall with a new gasket.

Some folks try to clean the bad side of the TB air path from the front with the flap forced open.

No way you can get back there to get out all of the crud. Cleaning it removed from the truck may well help free up the TB shaft that is most likely sticking.

 

In my case, my mechanic did a good cleaning of the TB and once the gunk was gone it ran really fast since the gunk was hellping seal the gap. If it's bad the linkage will have play if you grab it and try to wiggle it (at least it did in my case).
