I'll start by saying I did try searching and I do have a haynes manual, and I did look through a service manual. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the shift boot on my 92 4x4 pickup. I wanted to replace the seat gasket thing someone described in a different thread. All the documentation I see shows a completely different shift boot setup. My shift boots are separate for the transfer case and transmission. I don't want to rip them trying to get them out. Do I have to pull the carpeting? Has someone done this before? I can post a pic if needed. Thanks in advance.

 

Usually there are some screws that hold the decorative boots/console in place, remove those. Under that, some more screws hold the heavy rubber boots to the foolr, remove those. Then you should have access to the top of the tranny. You cn either pull up the inner-most rubber boot and push/twist the shifter cup to remove the shifter or some have 4 screws under the boot that hold the top of the shifter in place.

 

Well I think that's the issue. I don't have a floor or center console. My shift levers are just right on the hump in the floor. And they have grey rubber boots, and no visible screws anywhere. I'll try and get a picture up this afternoon so people can see what I'm dealing with.

Ok - I recently did this in my 1989 2wd pickup - So take it for what it is worth, but mine also only has a boot and carpet, no console. -- In mine, there are 4 screws under the carpet at approximatley the 4 "corners" of the shift boot. If you push on the carpet around the boot with your fingers, you can feel the round heads of the screws.

I was able to angle a long screwdriver under the edge of the carpet (the edge where the carpet meets the boot), placing the tip of the screwdriver on the screw head, then I pulled the screwdriver vertical, which pulled / stretched the carpet enough to remove the screw. Once a 4 screws are removed, the boot slid out from under the metal retaining plate which sits over the flange on the boot. (I also slid the retaining plate from under the carpet for ease of re-installation).

Re-installation was a little tricky, but you just have to reverse the process and be patient getting the screws back into the holes. Once it was all re-installed, I really didn't notice any negative effect on the carpet from using this manuver.

Roger, is that fitting behind your shift lever a breather for the transmission?!

 

Got the shift boot off now, thanks guys! It was just 4 screws, 2 along shifter and 2 along the transfer case shifter. Now on to the rest of the project. Thanks again for the quick responses.
