Help! front diff seal Q on 2000 4runner 4wd! Thanks...

Ok, so i searched forever on the net but NOTHING anywhere has come up regarding front diff seals or replacing them so ANY help is greatly appreciated with my issue....

A week or so ago i replaced the (inner) rear axle seals and proceeded to replace both (inner) fronts. All seemed to be perfect however today after changing my oil when i noticed that my Right side inner differential/axle seal is leaking, here is the question.

On all three (L Rear, R Rear, L Front) inner seals were all removed easily and replaced in a sinch, they all only go in so far and sit in their proper position snugly in their socket. However, when i removed the R Front seal i noticed there is no cup or socket like all other three seals.

I believe my issue is this: i pushed the seal in too far when i replaced it, can anyone give me any advice as to how far in the seal should sit? for example should it sit flush with the outside housing or be inset a few millimeters or far enough in so that you can see the bearings inside the differential housing (current positioning)? Thank you in advance.

scuba, thank you, may i be naive and just double check something. This is for the right/passenger side of my 3rd gen front diff seal, between my cv shaft and differential case right? (just because the right side is infinitely different than the left) Also, how did you get the fsm on your computer?

Yeah. That Fsm is for an 01-04 Tacoma and the diffs are the same as 3rd gen 4Runners. If you look at that PDF carefully you can see that they are messing with the passenger side diff tube. It gives the depth for the oil seal on that side.

Good luck. Glad I could help.
