Had 3 starters over the last 20 years do this...ALWAYS the starter! Sounds like the Solenoid is frozen up for a second when you engage it with the key/ign/power, and then the thing plunges out and starts just fine.

This is a 98(3.4?) and I'm not exactly sure what's involved here, ....but it's not the motor that the Intake has to be removed to replace the starter, is it guys?

I actually removed starter a few years , not fun but not incredibly difficult. I replaced the copper connectors and it has worked fine ever since. Isn't the solenoid seperate from the starter?

Too hard to say over the net, lol..... but if you can get it out easy(granting there aren't some other FAQ's answered pages on here that lead you to some things to check, first,ya know?) ...you could always, if you've ruled everything out, have it tested for free at many parts stores..???

PS> If you replaced the copper's, etc., ...I'm not sure, so I can't say conclusively, but that doesn't mean that the "Plunger" is without issues, right? I put a brand new starter in another rig,.....and the solenoid failed in 3 starts... Put another in, 10 years problem free!
