Need Oil Filter Remover That FITS!

Where can I get a cap-style tool that fits a 1998 V6 Toyota factory oil filter? I looked in Checker, AutoMart, AutoZone, Napa, CarQuest, K-Mart (where I bought one 9 years ago that fit, but somebody boosted it a few months ago), WalMart, and several other smaller or independent stores. No gots.

I got one from the dealership, don't remember the brand....checked for fit by borrowing one of their filters.

Lisle and KD worked well for me too, but you've prolly tried those.

Ok, just checked what I have now... a Vector 17075, nice solid fit on the oem filter

Hmmm. I usually remove the front wheel and access it from there. I have a tool that fits over the top of the filter and as you turn the tool CCW it contracts and grips the filter, but it's no good for tightening the filter.

I hope hand tight is tight enough... but I'm staying in town until I can get another 1/3-1/2 turn on the thing.

Totally agree, on a V6 there is plenty of room to access the oil filter from the driver wheel and get enough leverage to loosen and tighten it by hand.

Yeah, but when one gets old and feeble and it's freezing in the garage, one tends to look for an alternative.

Are you guys kidding? I had to get married to have an in house cap unscrewer. Very convenient.

Then again, with my long skinnies I can reach right in and get to it, and I use a converted veggie oil bottle to funnel it beyond the skid plate so no removal of wheel or skid.

Not tight enough to squeeze the gasket out, just tight enough it can be easily taken off with a wrench (in my case) or by hand (in the hubby's).

you dont need to tighten an oil filter with a wrench. in fact you will ruin it if you do. read the filters 99% of them will tell u
#1. put a small amount of oil on the filter gasket
#2 once the filter touches the block only about a half turn or so.
basically till its snug, not @ 50ftlbs and crushed to ?…?…?…?… cuz you tightened it with a wrench.

i work @ nissan their filters as well as toyotas are small. i use an $8 wrench from auto zone. it has 2 sides that are connected by cheap spring it grabs it off & your done.

in theory you should never need a wrench if you tighten the filter correctly and change it often.
