HELP ASAP, Drving w/ no front axel???
It's late and we're giving up, from some reason the front CV axel will not come out, actually only the tripod joint is still stuck in the housing. The question is, is it okay for Andy to drive home w/o a front pass. side axel. The drivers side is intact and still attached at both ends. The only thing we're worried about is the hub and wheel bearing being being exposed on the trip back to ASU(aprox. 2hr. drive). Please let us know anything that might cause a problem.
Thanks in advance,
Scott & Andy

i wish i could help, it seems like im the only one that ever sees your threads....
so far, this is what i've found, and it looks like you'll need to replace the axle before driving

NO IT IS NOT SAFE! You will ruin the bearing assuming the vehicle is Taco. That axleshaft holds the bearing together when you tighten down the nut. If you drive without an axleshaft it will blow apart! If somehow you can leave the outer joint(the one by the wheel) in there and take the shaft and the inner out, put the nut back on and tighten it, you should have no problems.

Well we did a shake down drive around town, no noise or anything adn he's now on his way back home w/ no front axel, there wasn't really much else to be done except get it towed. So this will be the expirement then. Thanks for all the input guys, I'm sure he'll post up and let yall know how it all turned out once he gets it into a shop tomorrow.

try to get a prybar behind the tripod joint to get it out of the diff. unless toyota makes their axles quite different from other manufacturers, it should pop out if you give it enough lovin'. good luck.

Well, I stopped and checked it a few times along the way. No problems running 2 hours on the highway w/ no pass. side front axle (I was a bit nervous). I'll see what happens tomorrow when I have at it again.

Glad you made it home, I was nervous for you, but there my brain was toast, I couldn't think of anything else to do. I'm blaming it all on that nasty corrosion you get from being in the mtns. Good luck and let me know what High Country finds out to be the problem.

On the 3rd gens the bearings are sealed, the axle just keeps them from slipping off the hub and also have a dust shield. In an emergency you can travel without an axle in place, I've done it, I but took the lid off a Pringles can and duct taped it in place to keep out the elements. Just don't drive around like a madman.....
