Help with 3rd generation

Hi all

We like my sons 94 enough that the wife wants a 4runner. I want more power than the 94, does the V6 in a 97 have better power. What other differences would I see in the 97. 3rd generation goes from 96 to 2002 right?

Thanks for all your help.

Power is greatly and I mean greatly increased on the newer 3.4 compared to the 3.0(3.slow). We've had a 95 w/ the 3.0 a 92 PU with the 3.0. Not to rag on them, but they couldn't get out of the way of their own shadow. I now have a 96 and am well pleased with the 3.4,. plus you can always add a supercharger

Wow, the web link pretty much says it all.

Anything I should look out for when I go looking at the 3rd gens? I've noticed about $15000 for a nice 98 with less than 100000 miles. Can I and should I look a little harder or is that about right?

Thanks again.

I say look harder, I paid 16k for mine and it only had 55k miles. That was in april of this year. You can find better than that if you look hard enough and are pacient.

Have you tried these: www.autotrader.com
www.ebay.com (maybe?)

Yes, both have a lot. It's hard to tell about Ebay because you don't see a final selling price. Is that a good place to shop?

I never have bought something major (1000+) but I have found some really good things there. Just check there feedback. Personally I would check autotrader and your local classifieds first. Just wanted to give you some more options. Also, after you search for 4runner on ebay, you can click on the "Buy it now" tab, and it will bring up all the 4runner's that are for sale at a buy it now price. Just to give you an idea on what people are asking.

Autotrader is a GREAT place to look. Especially if you don't mind looking out of state for your vehicle. I shopped patiently and eventually got a 1998 Limited 4WD with only 12,000 miles on it. I ended up paying $16000. I love my 4runner! I'm sure you'll end up with a great one too.

Just traded a '91 SR5 4runner with 215K miles on it for a '98 SR5 4Runner with 75K. Price was Right under $15K (before trade). The Power difference is incredible.

BTW...Jeff, Mine is Anthracite also...isn't it a kick-@ss color!?!

If you do buy off ebay don't put down a deposit larger that you are willing to lose (I would do a max of $500 just in case the seller is a crook, you can usually negotiate for this with the seller). Once you put the down payment on, tell them you will pick it up in person with a bank check or MO. When you do pick it up in person, go over it thoroughly before handing him that check (once he has the money you ain't getting it back).....and lastly make sure he gives you a valid title and bill of sale (no liens or slavage vehicle on the title!) Ebay is an awesome place to shop if you are savvy about how you do it.

fooddude? do you work for a food corporation?

What are you looking for for your wife?

I have a 99 limited 2wd, white/silver with tan leather in excellent condition that I'm about to sell for $15,000. It has _just_ turned 100k, but it's been maintained well and will be a great vehicle for years to come. The only reason I'm selling it is to get a 4wd.

best of luck... you have already made the RIGHT decision, now you just have to pick out the vehicle...

You can search cars.com for 4runners for a few weeks till one pops up-dealer and private ads shown- last 2 vehicles found that way- I live near New York City and didnt want a city truck- I expanded the distance for my search.
Good luck and happy Yota shopping!

I looked through Cars.com, Autobytel, Carmax, and pretty much every other web based car lot. I didn't think I'd be able to find a 5 speed with a locker like I wanted in this area. I finally spammed about a hundred dealers with a desription.

Within 10 days I had found my truck and 1 other similar one. And the dealers did all the work. Mine even came from a private party. A Toyota dealer actually called and told me where it was, gave me the ladies name and number, etc...

Haha...sure I'll sell it to ya for $2k over its current bid I dont know what I want anymore. One day I want a first, next a third. I should just shoot myself in the foot and by a Geo Metro

$15000 is pretty pricey for a 98 with just under 100k. Ive been looking around myself and it seems dealers are charging $5-6k over kbb price. Find a forsale by owner...much cheaper.

Ok you can let the other guy have it.

Geo metro, I have thought about that for as much driving as I do. but then thought HELL NO! I at least need a accord or somthing..lol.

15k for a 98? whats that?

Their are allot of people here that sell them by them selves. Just gotta look.
