hey guys. just got some hella 500 driving lights today, and im trying to figure out how everything goes together before i install. got a question. do i have to ground the switch?. thanks in advance.

oh, and on an other note, i finally got my car back from the shop. now im 4inches higher pictures are soon to come

 

You only need to ground the switch if it's a lighted switch. If you're switch is not lighted then there is no need for a ground and you only need to ground the fog lights themselves. If you have anymore questions just post away.

 

Hi Doink, lots of posts here on the Hella 500s

First thing, throw away the green switch they gave you.
You will have to drill a hole in your factory switch cutouts to install it, and why not just use a factory switch that goes in place of the cutouts?

Look on my website in the mods section for a JPG that shows you how to wire up the factory Toyota switch you can buy for $12 at your dealer.
The JPG with the switch will be on page one of the mods.

 

yeah, i think im gonna do the switch thing. but tomorrow, i want to hook everything just to make sure it works and everything is hooked up correctly. man, my piaa''s were so much easier, but then again, im kinda dumb. my piaa's are wired to my parking lights, im assuming i can do the same with the hellas?

 

No need to wire the power wire in the switch JPG.
Tap into a in cab fuse down by your left foot.

If you only want the lamps to work with key on, tap the wire behind the cigg fuse.

If you want the lights to come on without the key, find a fuse that is hot all the time.

Tapping to a fuse does not over load it, as the tap is not what powers the lights.
The tap is only for a small amount of juice to energize the 30 amp relay which in turn powers the lamps.

dumb question, what do you mean by tapping a fuse.? ha, i bet i know , but, im just a little unclear.

 

He means to strip a little bit of wire off one end, wrap it around one of the fuse blades, and then put the fuse back into its place.

 

use a T connector to tap into a wire. you can buy them at any autostore in the electrical section. those come in REAL handy!

 

Ya I didn't no this. The light in my factory switch stopped working and I took it apart and found that my ground had pulled loose from the connector. I was under the impression it would not work without the ground but the light is all that doesn't work.

The 500's are great, especially for the price. Try a search and you will come up with a ton of info on Hella lights.

Is the fuse good? The original one I had was bad, and it took me about 30 minutes to check something so obvious...

where is the fuse located? what part of SC are you from?

 

I'm talking about the fuse in the wire that you ran from the battery to the relay. I am in Clemson, SC, which is only about 20 miles or so from the border with GA.

 

i checked the fuse, all was good. hm, thats not to far from me..heh anyway, any other possiblities? im going to check the grounds for my lights. is there a really good place toground your lights that others have had success with?

 

See the two blue wires in my picture here?

The wires that are above each headlight.
One goes to the battery clamp down bracket, the other one goes to the coolent puke jug hold down clamp.

Those are my two ground wires for my bumper mounted Hella's.

Also check to make sure you have the relay wired up right.

Where they show wire #8, that is the wire that gets the power from tapping into the headlamps.
That wire goes to your switch.

But I do not have mine that way.
I have mine tapped into my underhood aux. fusebox with full time power.

This way I can turn the Hella's on anytime without my key.
Where did you tap that wire too?

You can tap it to a fuse in your incab fuse box as discussed earlier.

hey corey, i tapped into my parking light wire, the same one that i used for my piaas. like this set up, i only have to have my parking lights on for the aux to run, or atleast that was the case with my other lights. for now im just using the switch they supplied with the kit, although, i will eventually get that toyota one. im going to try to put the ground wires where you put them corey, and maybe that will do the trick. thanks for helping me with this guys.
