Aside from fluctuating engine temperature, what are other early warning signs of a blown HG, and how long does it usually take to cripple an engine?

Trying to figure out if I have this problem or not.

I have the famous 3.slo

 

white smoke out tailpipe.....oil looks milky on the dipstick....loss of power....if you have fluctuating temps already then you maybe have a few weeks left til it warps the heads badly and if anti freeze gets into the oil then you can destroy lower end parts too.

 

look for contamination of fluids.... look for the temps obviously ,but look for smoke out of the tailpipe, usually white, losing coolant, milky oil, oily coolant.....

if there is smoke, see if it smells funny and sweet

 

sometimes the fluid can get contaminated... look out for temps changing and white smoke in the exhaust.. keep tabs on your coolant level and monitor the condition of your oil and coolant.. smelling your exhaust is fun too

Cool, thanks guys. Let me give you a list of symptoms Im having...

Im having issues with the coolant rapidly "disappearing". Which I contribute to the truck boiling over at times and small leaks on both radiator hoses that have developed passed the clamps. Clamps were plenty tight, hoses fairly new. Would a blown HG cause excessive pressure on the cooling system?

Im getting an excessive pinging while driving, which I think (and hope) may be from bad gas I got from a small gas station.

Oil and radiator fluid both look fine, and show no signs of any mixing.

The engine does not smoke.

The temp seems to fluctuate more when the truck is being aggresively worked at low speeds (such as 4 wheeling), but sometimes (though rarely) will climb even while on the highway (usually water level is quite low at this point.).

I flushed the radiator and noticed excessive steaming.

Engine is suffering a noticable loss in power. Its missing at times. when I accelerate hard, it pings like a mofo, and feels like I have 25 octane gas. Could water in a cylinder do this?

Engine is a reman with less that 5000 miles on it. Water pump is new and is not making any racket. Other than the radiator hoses I have not noticed any other leaks.

The engine running too hot will make it ping, even with good gas. Water and coolant getting into the cylinders will not make it ping. Check your ignition timing, If it is too far advanced it will make it ping and overheat.

I assume you have the stock fan and thermal clutch. Dose the clutch engage when the coolant is hot? The fan clutch should "freewheel" when it is not needed and engage when it gets hot.

Have you checked the thermostat? It could be sticking somtimes causing the temp to fluctuate.

You need to figure out if it is low on coolant because there is a leak or if it is boiling away. If you are boiling the coolant STOP DRIVING UNTIL YOU FIX IT. This will trash your engine in a big hurry.

Pressurize the coolant system with a pump and gauge with the engine off and check all the hoses, clamps, freeze plugs, etc for leaks. It should hold steady pressure.

I'm having wierd problems with my 3.0. Its happened before and then it runs fine for a while, but now its happening again in the last couple days. It starts to stumble and act like its missing or something, and it makes some popping noises from the engine bay (It sounds like from the engine bay) and I can smell the smell of fresh oil. I do have a couple of minor leaks (one from the valve cover gasket)
If I pull over for a couple minutes and let it set and then start it up and go, it runs fine. It runs really well at night it seems...it only has these symptoms during the day so far. My temperature gauge never fluctuates, it rises to it's normal operating temperature and then stays there. So I don't think that it's overheating, but I do notice it seems more gutless during the day when it is hot than at night. What could it be?
