To have running boards or not, that is the question...

It will take you two trips out there, unless he has Mikes (smr4runners) design on paper since he has a 3rd gen.
If not, he will have to measure you up the first trip, then have you come back in a few days to get them put on.
I think it took him around 2 to 3 hours to put mine on.
While you are out there, there are several Toys out there to drool over.
He has a nice SAS'd '89 in the shop right now he is working on for his own use, and it's a flatbed.
His wife's Tacoma is looking real sharp now.

Jayson,
Just checked out J.A's site, will probably go ahead and order those, unless I can find something which looks close enough for cheaper.
To everyone else- what's your recommendations for sliderz (eg. where to get them, who makes them, etc.)

And no... I won't be adding a neon kit.

Painting the tank and member (huh, huh-huh, I said "member") would be cool. The clean-up before painting would be a bit of work though. I'm wondering if they would still be noticeable with sliderz on, probably not...

It depends on the sliders... I've seen some that are pretty open and those you'd be able to ctach glimpses of "something there" which could be cool.
The pre-paint clean up would be a pain, a LOT of elbow grease for sure - but I think it'd be worth it.
The bummer would be wanting to re-paint them every time they get nicked!

The paint would probably get trashed pretty quick with off-road use.

Sounds like something I saw on the Riceboy page

...where is that annoying Homer clip coming from!?!? Funny the first 3 times...now getting old. :-/
Anyways, back to the topic:
Depends on why you wanna take them off. I would've left my stock ones on but I didn't b/c my wife has trouble getting into the 4runner w/o them. I didn't like the stock ones either so I fab'd up some from a free set of Xterra step tubes. See my write up in the sig area.
Neither the stock running boards or the ones I fab'd will protect your 4runner in off-roading situations. Better get rock sliders.

Don't look at me for the homer clip!
Anyways, checked out Badlandtoys here in Washington, 250.00 + 65.00 for powder coating for a pretty rugged set of bars, +65.00 for install. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me...

Go for it, you won't be disapointed in the quality of Jeff's products.
Just watch out for this guy.
Once you pay him homage, he won't leave you alone
For more pics I took out there over the last year, click here.
The October folder has lots of pics of his wife's Taco.
She has the sliderz on it now.
They are some looooooooooooong ones.

I had the same dilemma. Since I do go off-roading fairly often, and outrun the police on occasion (j/k) I wanted the boards off.
What I didnt know, is that they would be so hard to sell. I haven't tried ebay yet, but it looks like the 3rd gen boards aren't too popular, anywhere. I even saw one of the yota guys giving his away.
They do provide flying rock protection. And yes, you will be minus front flaps when they are removed. I found some good flaps at Pep Boys, modified them, and installed them for a total of $8.00.
I would be happy to post the pics if anyone is interested.
Ditching the boards:
Advantages: Wont get hung up off-road, - 40lbs, truck looks higher
Disadvantages: Cant sell them, they take up garage space, rocker panels are now exposed, need to buy front flaps
I hope that helps a bit. I say take em off if you go wheeling at all.
