The ˟˟˟˟˟ has hit the fan...and broke it

I got a '95 4runner, and the other day I heard a squeaky noise coming from the engine, so I took a look, and apparently my fan shroud has been breaking off into my cooling fan, and now theres big chunks missing out of the fan. Now I just read a tech write up about the installation of a electric fan, but didn't think it was the same scenario considering I already have a fan, and I just need to change it out right? I have access to a cooling fan thats on my bro's 78 BMW, and they look very similar, is it possible to take mine off and put the other on? or is it much more involved? any help would do, thanks.

You might run into balancing issues if you swap one pulley driven fan for another. It just depends.

Time for the Taurus fan mod...

Try a search for "Taurus" and see what you get. Plenty of good threads and great info on guys that have done this mod. Basically, you are going electric on a budget.

At a shop, probably $200. At the stealer, your arm and your leg.

Give the dealer a call and see what they say. That will give you a good indication of the cost at a small shop. One of the guys here could help you out I am sure. It is really easy to change out the fan.

Get a flex fan. Flexalite has metal fans that flex at higher RPMS, it negates the need for a clutch which saves weight and gives a little more power (what I've heard anyway). There also is probably a bolt on kit available for your truck. Just go to a checkers/ schucks kragen and have them look it up. As far as a fan shroud, maybe a junkyard, or you might have to order a new one from a stealer, or maybe TOR can help you out.

The thing to watch out for with metal fans is they will shred apart in water crossings, which can be big damage. Otherwise they should be fine. Others have reported them blowing up on regular street driving, but half the hotrods out there and mild dragsters run them, so they must be doing something right.

alright, I just talked to my connection who's works at a dealership, and he said that since I have a manual fan and that I couldnt get an electric fan unless I did it myself and screw it up, is that flexalite metal blade an electric fan?

No, its just a fan that bolts on. Summit Racing sells them.

www.summitracing.com

Not sure if they have them for the 4Runner, but I don't see why not.

They are manual fans, just without the clutch assembly. Summit has them, and checkers/pepboys, really any automotive place should be able to get you one. You need the fan and a spacer for it.

Your primary concern is whether or not it will bolt on. Figuring out if it will fit inside the shroud is easy. Just measure the distance between the center of the fan pulley on the motor to the top of the shroud, multiply by two and subtract a safety inch.

Again, the hard part is finding a fan that will bolt right on. As far as I know they not universal.
