Yeah, maybe because it rains so much there....But if you want, I have all the stock numbers off the stuff in my pictures section. It seems like you should be able to call up Lowes, give them the scan code numbers and have them order some in for you. Haven't tried this but just a thought. Hope it works out for you!

Hey guys I'm wondering if the reason your gutter guard is rusting is because you used metal wire to hold it in. When two different metals touch I'm pretty sure it will cause electrolysis, which will cause rusting. I used zip ties on the interior of mine and have had it on for over a year and half, have driven it from here to Maine in salt weather and have never had a problem with rusting.

Does your car live outside? You saw where mine lives under those trees and all, so its possible I've had more water exposure. Let me know what you see though.

That is wild that you have taken yours all over, and mine has not been on all that long. Did you use the exact same stuff? It is possible that whatever is on it is not rust...maybe gunk from the tree or something, but it sure looks like rust, and it seems to be most prevelent around the cuts.

 

I think that Milan is on to something with the dissimilar metals. The gutter material is aluminum and the attachment wire that folks are probably using will be steel. That may have a lot to do with what you're seeing.

Plus, if you live in an area that has tough winters, with road salt, that's going to make a difference as well.

Up here in the PNW, we get rain, but not a lot of snow (well, the mountains do of course, but I tend to stay low).

I plan to do some experiments - once I get my hands on this stuff!

Guess what Milan said is possible the 2 disimilar metals could cause this issue not sure doh. I used galvanized wire not sure if that makes any difference. I do remember maybe I got my gutter guard from Home Depot and you had gotten yours from Lowes wonder if the material it was made from was different between the two place. Makes me want to visit HD today and take a look at who makes theres again since I didn't save any of the labels off mine and didn't get a picture of it.....
Keep us update if it really is rust Secellus it is kinda a wierd situation cause if its only rusting at the edges were the cuts are. Then when we cut it, it must of removed some type of protective film or something, but if its rusting all over its another issue for sure (electrolysis perhaps).

 

The gutter guard is probably zinc galvanized. Find yourself some zinc galvanized wire and you should be OK.

 

The stuff I bought is the aluminized gutter guard from Home Depot and then I used plastic zip ties. I don't know why else yours would rust.

 

The stuff i got is aluminium too! Could be on for 100yeas and never rust. Cost a bit too, as i bought it in a motor factors. Worth it though, if i never have to do it again!

That's an interesting idea about the metals. I don't know for sure of what the gutter world gutter-guard was made. I seem to remember that it was galvanized, though. It seems most everyone used an aluminized product. I checked the wire I used to mount it, and the wire is definately galvanized. The wire wasn't rusting, though.

Not cheap but anodized aluminum will hold up better than trying to paint the galvanized steel crap.

Besides with the 9" width I may be able to do the wife's tacoma now.

I started to mod a 2wd grill over the weekend, got everything cut out, but I couldn't find any wire snips for the mesh!


I have a question, and I will read through tomorrow to see if it is answered already, but getting tired now...

Do you run the mesh along the inside wall of the hole to the back of the grill and attach it, or do you just cut it to the shape of the hole and attach it towards the front of the grill? I was going to run it back, but I don't want it to look cheesy either.

 

PWT, running the mesh more towards the back adds some rigidness to the form. I got mine at HD and it was galvanized. I'm thinking although the aluminum won't rust, it won't be as rigid as the steel. That's a big hole and you'd want it as stiff as possible. I like the blacked out look and the epoxy paint stays shiney and rust free.
