Going from E-Locker Diff. to Open Diff.

I have a 2000 prerunner with the e-locker and want to go with an open locker for a limited slip. Do I need the whole axle and diff. assembly or just the diff.?

too bad you have a taco or I would buy your e-locker.

you can sell your elocker and get a open diff and intall the Limited slip. or you can just swap thirds IIRC.

and i have a question for you... why would that matter? an e-locker is an e-locker. they're all 8" toyota third members and are interchangable. the NON-TRD 2WD prerunners have a 8.4" third - basically the same as a tundra or sequoia. all TRD taco's have an 8" third with e-locker - either prerunner or 4WD - same as the 4runners.

Well, I know there are PLENTY of people that will be willing to buy that thing from you, you'll be able to get a pretty penny for it.

IME, limited slips work when you dont want them to (i.e. on ice), and dont work when you want them to (i.e. off-road)...

This is just so true... I think that needs to go into the Yotatech quotes hall of fame

if he's going to drag race it, then he'll be going in a straight line - the precise situation where an e-locker would be MORE beneficial than a limited slip rear.

if he's going to need more traction in a turn - like in auto-cross stuff - then he needs to sell the taco and get a subaru.

there is NO common situation that i can think of where a limited slip would be MORE beneficial than a e-locker, on-road or off...

This isn't a question of why or should I. The question was...

The simple answer is you need the whole axle to make the swap relatively easy. The complex answer is...if you modify the housing you can switch 3rd members.

I modified a non-e-locker housing to accept an e-locker, so I would assume you could do it the opposite way.

Kinda off topic, but, did the Tundra's come with e-lockers? My dad has a limited slip in his Tundra and it sucks. We got stuck twice in Baja last year and wished we had a locker back there.

no. the tundra, sequoia, and non-trd tacos have a 8.4" rear end. they are only available with a LSD.

Well, I have basically turned a prerunner into a more street-wise truck. I lowered the front and rear and was thinking about getting a diff. that would be more useful to me on city streets to take care of the slipping and traction problems that I am having now. So basically, I need something that will act right in sharp, fast turns. Just more streetable.

I know that a prerunner was not intended to be a street truck but I only have 45,000 miles on the truck and I have used the locker one time. So, I'm basically turning my truck into a project.

Your best bet would be to swap someone axles.. its will be the easiest and cleanest. Personally I would rather play with a little brake fluid that gear lube. As far a a limited slip they didnt come from the factory with one so you will have to add it. If you get one get a detroit trutac, its got helical gears and it torque biased.. dont get a clutch pack one all they are is a waste of money.

There are plenty of people here that would swap you... probally even buy you a LSD and swap you...

There are several ways to do this, the first has to do with the stock setup and is electrical.. not sure on the complete proceess but look HERE.. the second is to get a cable acuator for it from downey..
