Thanks for the response! I know what you are saying, and having spend major $$$ in the past on a GReddy system for cars, I can totally understand what you are saying about a custom system with a replacement muffler. Some of the folks on here are getting an entire cat-back replacement system, do you think that just a muffler is sufficient, or do you think that a custom cat-back system is better? 2.5" is probably more than comes stock, so I am sure it helps.

To answer your question, now I have not done a deckplate mod, but do plan on it in the future. My father has a Supercharger, the K & N Filter Charger System, and a Gibson Exhaust and is trying to get me to go the same route. The thing is, from what I have read, it does not sound like that's the best option. I am DEFINITELY going to get the supercharger, it's just a matter of when.

Like I have said over and over, this is a brand new truck. I have to be careful of what I spend on it because I am getting married in less than a year. The woman won't be too happy if I go dropping 3k on some "thing" while we are supposed to be saving for "Wedding things".

In time, the super charger will come. I just want to be sure that whatever I get will be compatible (and good enough) for putting a super charger in place.

I was 100% ready to go with the K & N Filter Kit (the one that comes with the shield and what not) until I started reading more and more about how it generally causes HP loss. From what I have read so far, the deckplate seems to be better with an Amsoil filter. I am just trying to find the best way to break it to my father who is so gung-ho on his setup.

I still wonder about all the hot air that must get into the intake with that deckplate mod.

I'm looking into a new muff not for a huge vrrooom, but a nice little rumble. Which muff would be best for that? I called my muff shop yesterday and they quoted me $226 for new everything from the cat back with the Magnaflow, I'm just worried that may be a little more vrroomm for my taste. Any suggestions, opinions, snide remarks?

I'm running the K&N FIPK Kit (It replaces the stock airbox) and since installing that I definitely have BOOST in horse power, despite what people have said about it, I know that there is a boost in power from it, and I have yet to have any problems with it, I regularly clean it and re-oil it (Usually every oil change, or every other depending on how much dust i've gone through)

So don't throw out the idea of K&N FIPK (I Don't know about the plain old air filters, because I never noticed any difference using it over a stock before i got the FIPK) because atleast in my case it boosted my horse power, and I definitely have a noticable difference while passing on the freeway, and straight off the line... I especially do now after my custom cat-back

In my opinion, I didn't like the idea of cutting a hole in my airbox and doing the deckplate option. I live in Southern California, and I very rarely go through much mud, or ford (I know, I know Ford is the anti-christ, but I mean it in the other sense ) So I spent the $200 and got the FIPK Kit, and I think it was well worth every penny.

Braden, us 2nd gens don't have the option of putting on the deckplate. Our airbox is not set up the same as the 3rd gens. They are lucky enough to be able to put on the deckplate. I do like the sound of my Dynomax muffler. It is a nice mellow growl, but it not too loud, which is cool. I don't really like loud exhausts (just my opinion). :fireman:

Exhausts don't add much horsepower and hardly changes the torque curve. It will add more top end hp and torque for turbocharged cars/trucks since turbos make their power from exhaust gas.
Going to a larger exhaust pipe diameter will reduce backpressure, but I doubt it's a significant improvement for a N/A engine.

Hi-flow cats do perform better than stock cats (at least in the turbo applications I've used/seen). I burnt out my hi-fow cat pretty quickly, but it was the rich A/F conditions from my rotary engine that killed the brick inside the cat.
Anyways, I paid about $150 for a hi-flow 3" Inlet/Outlet cat.
I'd imagine a 2.25" or 2.5" would be cheaper since it's a more commonly used diameter.

Intakes are good for lowering the air intake temperature and adding denser air charge to the intake.
The person who experienced the change in power probably experienced better air temps that may have helped the torque come on a bit earlier (seat-of-pants feeling is felt from torque, not horsepower).

I bought my 99 Runner with a TRD exhaust and supercharger.
It definitely sounds sweeter than the stock exhaust, but it doesn't have the bass tones of the V-8 custom exhausts I hear from the domestics.

Anyways, I may have to replace the muffler since I'm too lazy to pull the broken studs out of the O2 sensor flange on the midpipe.
