Gears?

Trying to understand how to buy my gears for my front and rear differentials. Guess first question is the number. upgraded Ex:4.10:1 if i had say 3.97:1 wpuld this be a better combination? like does the higher the number give you more tourque? and the smaller gives you better hp and acceleration. and the next question would be where would i buy them from? i want to eventually have 33's tires on a 3rd gen limited 4Runner. I just want to be able to off roadf better with bigger tires but also want ti understand how the gearings work. also last thing is how it would effect a locker since i hope to change the rear diff as well as the front to ??? Sorry for the extyened post but please help.

the rule with gears is, the higher numerically they are, the more torque they'll give you. of course, it's a trade-off between acceleration(higher number) and top speed(lower numbered gears). on most toyotas, you won't have to worry about top speed

for 33s on that, you might want to get 4.56 gears. on a V6 runner, this will put your power and speedometer to about stock with bigger tires. since its a 4x4, you'll need to regear both the front and rear, otherwise things could get messy.

for installation, you'll want to have a shop or somebody experienced do the gear setup. you'd want to put in a locker at this time -- saves money.

Gear ratios, differentials, lockers, indentification, etc...
